I just bought one of these asus A2D notebooks. I think that it's quite heavy and big, but the performance is perfect (8400 points with 3Dmark 2001 SE & the latest Ati drivers installed). The memory installed is 512 DDR @ 266 mhz (not @ 333, as it says in the asus website. It has a 5.1 integrated sound card, but the center is a little low. I haven't tried yet to repair this, but I think I will manage to do it by decreasing the power of the rear satellites. The design is quite good and the display (15')is very bright! Though I couldn't make the tv-out work (I think that it's a hardware problem).
Since it's my second notebook (the first was HP ze1200), by compairing them, i just can say that the asus i much bigger but the design of the Hp is better.I can't speak of performance between them, cause they're different classes. The asus's cooling system is very good, the hot air exits the machine from the back panel and the bottom doesn't heat at all (unlike the HP). The Irda port is working perfectly. That are my first observations. I think it's a good machine for it's price, but quite heavy for transporting.

Thanks for sharing this info. Could you please comment on other display aspects - viewing angle and speed? I assume it's XGA (1024x768) display. This machine is also first on my list.

    Hey Jamaika,
Thanks for the great post, most welcome !
If you get the chance keep us posted on any extra thourghts you may have, user experiance etc that would be swell!
I agree that the notebook it a bit on the bulky size, but for the price I guess you can't complain to much !
Also with regards to the memory, you should check with where you got the laptop from and make sure that they didn't rip you off by swaping the memory down.

:) they didn't swap the memory!! It says so on the box! The display is 1024x768 XGA, i'm quite impressed with the viewable angle. At 75 degrees one can still see the image! The colors at this angle are not so bright, but at least it's not absolutely black like in my older HP. I went today to the seller company to complain about the tv-out! It's just that the cable I used hasn't the right configuration. There's a small cable included in the package, which has a s-video jack at one end and a female chinch at the other. I had to use it instead of mine! The only thing I had to do is to buy a longer cable with 2 male chinches at the 2 ends and it works fine!! I converted my hdd to NTFS, but I think that the machine boot is a little slow (compairing to a desktop machine). That's it for now! I'll keep you informed when I learn something else!

There's one thing that i really don't like!!! [ :(][ :(] It's the speed of the hdd! When I burn a CD, the notebook slows so much, that it becomes enven difficult to browse! The same thing happens when someone downloads from you a file over the LAN! Is this a problem of my own notebook, or it's really because of the speed of the HDD?

Yeah, its the slow, slow HDD's fault (I think) cause I have the same problems. I belive the HDD is a 4200RPM version and most desktops have 5400 or 7200RPM versions, so we're seeing the difference.
