Fix the right shift key problem on EEE 1000H (or similar)

This works for any model or any computer, I still see forum members mentioning the right shift key issue on the 1000H so I wanted to re-release this fix.

The right shift key simply is not in a good position, you can and will get used to it after time, but instead of forcing myself to do that I looked for a solution.

The solution (one of many) was use of a program called Auto Hot Key.

Its a keyboard remap software that can make any key have the function of another key. The idea here is to make the up arrow key that falls where the right shift key should be act as the right shift key, and to have it temporary so that it can be turned off at any time.

This program is very powerful as its a scripted program.

Here is a script written by htwingnut to do exactly what we needed to make the 1000H a full speed type machine out of the box.

If this thread had you interested in programs to help extend the usefulness of the 1000H I may as well share a few other things with you.

Touch Freeze - Here - A simple light weight program that disabled the touch pad while your typing so you do not accidentlay move the cursor or activate somthing by hitting it with your palm. Use this program and turn off the palm check inside the 1000H drivers as this works better and it will fix the scrolling problem present after updating to the new drivers with the new gestures. (note there is an even never touch pad driver version out now since I found this fix not sure if its needed still but it works)

Rocket Dock - Here - A Mac like icon dock that has many options. Also lightweight (important for a netbook) you can create shortcuts to important of often used programs/folders/documents so it makes using the EEE a bit more efficient and more fun.


Some FireFox Addons

FlashBlock - Here - A program that blocks any flash object from loading but you can start them at any time with a play button. This greatly speeds up page loading and makes things easier on the EEE.

AutoHideStatusBar - Here - Hides the status bar at the bottom of the browser to give you more vertical view pixels, very important, very handy.

StoporReloadButton - Here - Makes the stop & reload buttons on the nav bar into one. Saves you some space. Stop when page is loading, reload after page has loaded. No need for 2 button spots.

TinyMenu - Here - Makes the browser menu more compact.


Personal Notes

Get 2gb of RAM, it will make things much faster and more fluid and ram is so cheap there is no reason not to upgrade the stock 1gb into 2gb. Warranty is not voided and its very easy to do (only 2 screws)


My EEE

What I use my EEE for and what i think its great at.

GPS (got a cheap usb gps adapter) - programs used, Garmin Mobile PC, Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009, Inav Iguidiance.

Music & Movies (upgraded HDD to 250gb) - The EEE can handle 720p movies in XP without a problem but no need for that high of a resolution. Since it uses a regular 2.5" hard drive you can put up to a 500gb drive in here and have your entire music & movie collection on the go. The 1000H is the clear winner of every netbook model when it comes to volume & clearness of sound. Not even the newer 1000H clones have been able to top the original 1000H.

Games - The EEE was just calling out to me to be a emulation machine for gaming on the go. Its time to relive and replay those classics from super nintendo, genisis, nintendo, atari, or various arcade games. It runs all the older 2d system emulators perfectly.

 

This seems to be very useful information yet it got little reaction.

I don't think the EEE is very popular for members of this forum, or maybe the other way around, the forum is not very popular among EEE owners?

 

Dunno, I see lots of EEE owners, I guess its due to being tagged for the 1000H and there are so many models that nobody looked at it due to having other model numbers.

Im on my EEE 1000H right now since I sold the G50V and I am using this fix. I have not used my EEE in over 6 months I think and I am typing full speed (actually a bit faster than I can on the G50V) due to this fix so I think it is indeed very important.

KeyTweak also works, it uses the Windows registry and can be undone quickly.
