WARNING: for G50V and probably other laptops the "default" set may still not work properly!
As mentioned below you may be better off just tweaking them individually.
I have had good experiences tweaking my services, quicker startup speed and quicker system response as well as reduced memory usage.
However it can be difficult, and I have lost access to the internet, to the point where I just formatted my machine. The builtin windows utility is very unfriendly and it is very time consuming to use. I figured that someone had to have run into the same problem I had so I searched and found this:
http://www.speedyvista.com/registry.php
They provide registry and batch files to preconfigured service settings, called Default, Safe, Tweaked, and Minimal.
Definitely saving me some timeJust make sure you download the Default setting before you apply one and it kills your internet like I did once

^ Looks nice.
But I would still go with this > http://www.blackviper.com/
Very well detailed services list, their dependencies, and such... and a nice table view to boot, making it easy to compare and understand
Cheers -
It looks like they must be related somehow - the lists and their format look nearly identical- the only difference is the link I provided actually includes the preconfig default, safe, etc sets. So at a bare minimum, before you start working on your services - do yourself a favor and download the default config - god forbid the worst happens and you don't have to sit there going through 10000000 services looking for the culprit that killed your internet -
well thats true.. and irrespective of following any links or any guides with regard to messing with the "services", its always recommended to have a back up (either of your data or a complete PC backup or at least a restore point) and then proceed with caution..
As for some default sets, if I remember well, even blackviper' had downloadable files.. not sure if they still have it.
Anywaysfor anyone meddling with the services, be patient and take extreme care. Cheers.

What I typically do is I read the service descriptions and decide on my own whether I need it or not... never used any guides. But I do keep on the safe side (i.e. if I don't know I leave it on or turn it to Manual).
I don't see why you would need to reinstall Windows for a messed up service configuration. Just start back the services until you either get to the default config, or things start working again. -
Ok so I messed up again!!! I'm adding a warning to the first post... it appears the default set does NOT fix the lack of wireless. I strongly suspect a proprietary driver for the card that is unique to the laptop that they have not included. Even after I restore to the default set, Windows Wireless does not automatically startup. Fortunately this can be fixed manually, and then fixed permanently via a regedit fix:

What a pain :-/ Sorry for posting prematurely my solution isn't so hot! -

Cannot for the life of me figure out what services I disabled that are required for wireless networking
lol now I need help
-
If they are driver-installed services, I recommend you reinstall the driver, that should re-install the services as well.
Also, you could post a list of the services setup that you currently have, so that we can offer help. (Action menu, Export list) -
Thanks EBE! I'll post the list when I get home from work.. I went through the list and tried enabling services but could not find the one.
I did try reinstalling the driver, that didn't seem to help unfortunately. -
Here is the export... Thanks so much if you can see anything outstanding!
NOTE: I had to change to .doc so the upload limit wouldn't stop me from uploading it. The export format is ugly I'm sorryI need to download open office so I can open it in Spreadsheet that's the only way it will get any prettier....

I have commented (quite a lot
) on your list of services.
Judging from your setup I think it is a really bad idea to use the services configurator that you were mentioning in the first post on the thread. It stops and disables some really essential services, including some without which your network is almost sure not to work, such as TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper.
It also stops and disables some services that may not be needed by some people, but are almost sure to be needed by others, like Print Spooler. And some of the parts of Vista that make it better (and not just looking better) than XP, such as SuperFetch. And these are just examples, there are other issues in the setup, see the file for more details.
This is really the case with most such service configurations on the net. In the name of optimizing performance, they enforce draconic setups that stop a lot of functionality on the machine and leave the user completely in the dark as to how to get it back.
At the very least they should make an automatic backup of the configuration they find running and allow the user to get back to it... but I'm willing to bet many of them don't do that, because "they know what's good for you".
Okay, /rant.
I attached two files, the "doc" is really plain text, and the "rtf.doc" is RTF, with my comments made italic so that they are easy to see.
Hope this gets you back online.Attached Files:

I found Black Viper's site to be very useful in the fact that it has both XP and Vista, great descriptions, and connected services. But I agree with the above posts, definitely decide on your own. A lot of the services suggested to be off in the safe category, I occasionally use and thus kept Auto not manual/off. Some he suggested as off I went manual. Definitely make a backup and restore point.

I do not know BlackViper's tool, but the OP used some other website for his setup. So my rant should mostly be applied to that tool.
