I've had this laptop on the road now on and off for two months. This laptop does have some SERIOUS power management issues. I think it is completely related to POWER4Gear and NOT windblows. In fact, it and another unrelated problem I was having with my network card not recognizing when something was plugged into it was SO MADDENING, that I reinstalled windblows from the recovery disks back to factory and started over. I had given up, but after reading some posts on the subject over and over, I dug back into the problem I believe I have a solution. This worked for ME:

In your Power4Gear Profile for Battery Saving, TURN OFF Hibernation TIME OUT. I believe that Power4Gear cannot handle being in Standby, then trying to turn back on the disk and save to RAM for Hibernation. That's where the problem lies:
Let the computer handle Standby, and you HIBERNATE when you want with FnF1 or the lesser known "Start-Turn OFF-Hold down the left shift key". This causes the Standby prompt to change to HIBERNATE.

DO NOT ALLOW POWER4GEAR TO HIBERNATE. When I did this, everything seems to work perfectly.

To sum it up, here are my profile settings for BATTERY SAVING:
    Standby Timout Timer: 5 minutes
    Hibernate Timout Timer: NEVER
    CPU Performance Level: 25%
    Video Panel Light: 13%
    Video Off Timer: 1 miinute
    Screen Saver: OFF
Hard Drive Timout Timer: 3 minutes

I hope this helps. Like I said, it works for me. When I want the system to Hibernate I just use the keystroke, otherwise I let it go to standby on it's own.

Ill give this a try, thanks for the response.
I was starting to think I was nuts regarding this power management/wierd lcd wont turn back on problem.

On a complete side note, Ive was getting some extreme lag on battery mode the other day. I finally figured out that with omega drivers on battery mode ati is default set at 50% even when P4G is set to high performance. Changing it saps battery life, but allowed the program to run smoothly; oddly enough its a database program not a graphic/3d intense game etc.

Actually it's not a powergear issue that's keeping you from standby..... it may be the way it's configured all on it's own. My suggestion would never be to use the battery saving mode anyway, especially in it's stock form. Keeping it in email or dvd mode when you're battery should be fine for normal use and then set your standby times in windows. I think the problem is more of windows and powergear disagreeing because both have settings for these options..... either use one or other. Glad you've finally found your own personal perfect settings though.... it takes a good month to really get a feel for what you need.

My A8jm has a similar issue in Power Mode - when I walk away for a while (say to lunch) the only way to bring back my machine is a hard reboot. I'll give this a shot. Thanks for the tip!

Every Asus unit in the last six years really could have this issue if settings are right.
