If I have WINXP pro at home, do I need to use the recovery cdrom that came with my laptop? Or can I just do a clean install off my Windows XP cdrom, and get the apps/drivers off the recovery cd?

There is really no point in not using the recovery discs ASUS provided, because if you ever need to reformat, the recovery disc system is a breeze, as it prompts you to do everything, you barely have to do much but put in the discs!

actually asus does have some bloadware running. when my stock setup of my w2v all the programs running were using almost 300 megs of ram. a clean install of xp will only use 150 megs and under 200 with all the extra programs i load.

I personally like to use my own copy of Windows, that way I can install everything I need myself.

I wish Asus chould ship their notebooks with a XP installation CD rather than the recovery dvd. I mean, come on, why should i be forced to install Norton Internet Security 2005? Atleast give me 2006 when i buy a notebook almost in the beginnig of Q2 of 2006. Everyone know installing and uninstalling Norton applications usually makes something break. Also i like to use the newest drivers, yes you can update them all, but that can usually make something break also unless you complete uninstall them first... So in the end, for alot of users, this recovery dvd only makes more work for some people than it has to.

I paid for the license, now give me my disc...

That is also my opinion. Surely it is about the money, and the most users don't care anyway if they have a recovery cd or a real cd.

There is a way to make a real xp installation cd out of a recovery cd in the web. I do not know if its legal or illegal, since you bought a pc with "OEM recovery cd"...

on my Dell, i was able to use my recovery CD as a windows installation CD. All I did was just insert it in and boot off it. Im not sure if it's the same with Asus cds though

Yeup, coriolis is once again correct. The Asus recovery cd is a dream, I don't have one, but I've used one on a friend's notebook.

It's quick as heck and you're up and running in no time. Your XP-Pro cd at home will do the same job, but just takes forever, but since I'm a freak I would probably use the windows xp-pro cd. :D

I've tried Toshiba's recovery disc as well and holy **** is the recovery fast on those cds.

Wait, I just woke up so I'm kinda groggy, is it disc or disk. Strange. Floppies are disks, but cds are discs eh?

    Hrmm I just noticed that.

rukawa11, just uninstall it normally as you would any other program and then go in manually and take stuff out.

That's the way I used to do it.

You can also download CCleaner and that thing has a nice feature of being able to select which registry entries that are broken to delete.

I'm sure the norton entries will pop up because you have already uninstalled Norton.

    Try that.

    Hi

I brought an Asus laptop last year and it came with the recovery cd
Recently my laptop was infected with spyware and other viruses and I uninstalled Norton and I was suppose to reinstall it back, but since Asus had Norton built in I didn't have the cd to reinstall it.

So now my laptop is infected and is there any way I can fix it?
Would the recovery cd help???

    Thanks
