I noticed my drive is also listed in the tables. I'm guessing these are lists of drives for which this firmware is suitable? What is this update supposed to do? I'm not too keen to flash my drive with some random firmware I know nothing about.... Anyone else with a UJ-845S want to try? ;-) Fingers crossed having this firmware available means an RPC-0 firmware will be out soon.

The reason I was interested is because I have a combination of Australian and UK DVD's and at the moment I have no way of watching them both on my laptop. When I searched for RPC-0 (play any region) firmware for my drive I was told that a firmware update file from Panasonic was required that could be modified to be RPC-0. So I was hoping this firmware could be updated to RPC-0.

Phil, there was a discussion on Asus forum about unlocking DVD drives - and folks were reporting success with a so called DVD Region Killer, which can be downloaded from this page apparently. Have you come across this utility already by any chance? I haven't yet tried it myself as I don't have any DVD disks from multiple regions right now. But I will be facing the same problem very shortly as I live in the States but watch a lot of European material.

    Hi Dolphin,

I've downloaded and installed Region Killer but I'll give that a go too if Region Killer doesn't work out. I've just got to get one of my Australian region (4?) DVD's to give it a go.

I meant to say too I still think region free firmware is the way to go if possible. It's a much neater solution and the fewer background tasks that are running on my machine the better as far as I'm concerned. I was always told when I enquired about region free firmware for the Panasonic drives that the problem was that Panasonic never releases firmware so there's nothing to patch into being region free. So hopefully with the release of this firmware someone will be able to patch it and solve the problem for all of us.

Sure.. i ran it, and it came up with a box saying something like -./_:%¤¤#:__#::¤_%_&/_%_¤_#:#:;#_""_ , and an option to click 'OK' ,and then it closed the program.
I rebooted, and the firmware was still 1.00. :base:

You're a braver man than me Speedy K :) I wonder what this file is? Maybe I should actually get off my bum and learn how to reverse engineer this thing....

    I'm all balls.
Nah, it was a calculated risk. I expected it would'nt upgrade at first click, and it would do some checking of the drive before it did.
Whether i actually would have pressed 'go' if i got the option, i don't know.

    I agree

That ANYDVD program allowed me to read zone 5 disks on a zone 2 reader

The other advantage is that this solution seems to be hardware vendor/brand independent

    cheers

AnyDVD worked for you?? I'm still trying to get it to work on my M5N, which was the UJ-812, I think, which apparently none of the software region-free fixes seems to help. It's been about 6 months since I last tried it, though - I wonder if anything's changed? It would be great to be able to play both UK and US DVDs on mine.

Yes, and nothing changed with my optical device, after the use of ANYDVD and a zone 5 DVD with a zone 2 optical device

No, I meant I wonder if anything has changed with the software programme since I last tried it. It used to specifically say it wouldn't work with some of the Mat****a drives, liek the UJ-812, So I was hoping that if it now worked with yours, it might also work with the UJ-812, but I don't know. Maybe yours wasn't on the list of the ones that it didn't work with initially. I guess I'll have to try it out again myself - unless anyone else has already tried it with this drive?

I had success combining the region-killing utilities (I used DVD43) with a player that doesn't enforce region encoding itself (Media Player Classic or VideoLan Player) on a W3N.

Some have had luck with this on Matsu****a drives while others have reported failure, so it's probably not a universal solution. Couldn't see a pattern as to why it works for some (discs?) and not for others. I can't retest it ATM either, but it could be worth a shot.

    Hi, Robyn

    Maybe I'm "out of topic", but I have a W2V with a Matsu****a UJ-845S optical device
I use ANYDVD 5.4.1.1 (probably outdated)

If no one is going to try installing the firmware, at least post the blank media that is giving the best results to burn at 8x

I've had no problems burning at 8x with Imation DVD's. It's the only brand I've bought so far though so I can't comment if they're better or worse than other brands.

Another issue about this dvd rw drive is that it only writes at 4x, on an 8x Emtec DVD+RW. I've been using emtec since its one of the cheap yet solid disc manufactures in the market. Anyone tried the new firmware and is capable of writing 8x which should be the right speed sourced from its specs from its technical specs sheet... which says 8x dual layer.

I questioned ASUS support for more information the Mat****a UJ-831D drive. No firmware update. Tech did supply a list of media for what it's worth. I have not tried any of the recommendations yet.

    +++++++
Sorry for the delay, but we were checking into this more and found there is not really a newer firmware update for this optical drive model.

If you are interested, below are some approved media IDs, but you will not normally be able to check this before you buy the media, so be careful of this

You can check the media ID from the Windows Programs menu for the Nero software and Nero Info Tool Disc information.

Let me know if there are any questions or problems.

    Thanks.

    Sincerely,

    Albert

nope at this point there is no firmware update for it. I just bought some sony 8x DVD-R's and they are infact recognized as 8x and will burn at this speed. So sony's are a go while Fuji Film 8X DVD+r's are only abe to burn at 2.4X and HP 8X DVD+R will only burn at a maximum of 4X. This is with the UJ-831D Matsh1ta burner.
