    Hi,

I wonder if someone could help me. I have been trying to find a solution via forums and Google, but not came across anything definitive yet.

I basically set about doing a complete reinstall of Windows via my USB pen on my Asus UX31. I thought it was all going well, I formatted the C: drive and went to click next on the install. However, I keep getting the error that "setup was unable to create a new system partition".

I did keep the recovery part of the drive just in case, but is this error being cause because all partitions need to be deleted and only 1 partition created?

Any help would be hugely grateful

    Thanks

    Russ

Nah dude, you can keep your Recovery partition it has nothing to do with the error. How did you format C? make sure it is NTFS format, and maybe redo your USB as well. What prog you used to make USB bootable?
You will get it to work I am sure, make sure you are installing to C.

    HBENZINO,

    Thanks for the reply.

I used DiskPart to make the USB drive

I formatted the HDD using the windows installation section. I also formatted it with DiskPart, both didnt work :(

I tried everything, and still could get past that error. So in a fit of panic, I took it back to the shop and they actually replaced it for me :)
But Im still left with a crazy amount of space used up.

So I just tried to do a window reinstall over the top of the current one (that way if anything goes wrong I should still have a working OS, where as before I deleted and formatted everything).
Unfortunately, its still saying "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an exsisting system partition. See Setup log files for more information"

I cant think what it could be, I have tried a set of Windows files I downloaded, and also tried my windows CD files (only 32bit though).
Maybe the the way the USB has been made it wrong??

    Any ideas??

yeah it should work,go ahead and try WIN7 USB MAKER from here:
    joshcellsoftwares.com

By the way, you probably have win7 premium, there is a way you can upgrade to ultimate just by using Win upgrade.

Anyway try the USB maker, and feel free to join us at
    Windows 7

for more win7 stuff, it is just a cool site.

No, you should be able to fresh install over premium or anything; I was just saying that there is a way to jump ship easily to win7 Ultimate.
Go ahead and set up your USB using USB maker, it will work.

Just get the windows USB/DVD download tool from cnet downloads, that one is specifically made to make bootable windows installations and ridiculously easy to use.

I'm researching this problem as well. I have two Lenovos that will not install from a USB key at all with the same errors. Nothing seems to resolve it.

Researching, I put some pieces together at least. The Lenovos both insist that the USB key is in fact, a USB hard disk. Windows 7's installer doesn't like this at all. Regardless that it doesn't even show up on in install list, the installer still thinks "oh, here's a hard drive I better just make sure it's kosher for the boot loader" and the USB key isn't, so it balks.

I have a feeling if I can get the installer to ignore the USB key as a hard drive, the install will work.

For reference, I just booted off a DVD and the installer went through without any hitch. So I know nothing with the actual hard disk was the issue.

weird isht, good thing Asus is ok with USB keys
I would still use a different prog to compile win 7 in the the USB and give it a go just to eliminate the middle man software used for making the usb
