I was looking at both screens and I think A8 is a little brighter than V1. Haven't checked viewing angles though. Sorry about that finger :p

Thanks for the pics, mastha. The V1j looks alright... but I still prefer the looks of the V6, actually. The V1 just looks kinda bulky to me...

It's not bulky, in fact it's really thin but built quality should be a little higher for such a product, that's my opinion.

Mastha, I find it pretty strange.

I know you are a respected member, and I don't hesitate about your knowledge, but I have been speaking to several fresh V1J owners the last few weeks and no one complained about its construction/build quality.

I didn't say that construction or built quality is bad, but IMO is worse in compare with W3. I just expected that V1 will be better in terms of overall quality or at least at the same level but it's not. Still great laptop though.

It is really too bad that ASUS didn't use the same materials for the V1J as the V6J. That hairline aluminum magnesium is very classy.

Is the A8Jp build quality really that poor? Or just in comparison to the w3j? Its the same chasis as the A8Jm, which was fairly solid ive heard. Kinda made me anxious hearing its your biggest disapointment.

Well considering I obviously stated the words "build quality", umm yeah thats what I meant, not looks. I already thought it looked quite nice.

I think Mastha's comments are relevant. There's nothing actually wrong with the V1J's build quality, it just doesn't quite measure up to the benchmark set by the W3J or V6J.

In short, good but not as good as we were expecting...

@ SSJ3Goku : the design is fine, in fact I like it very much but the built quality is not as good as I expected. I mean I thought it will be similar to A6/F3 but it turned out that it's not. The plastic feel a little too soft? I don't know how to explain it good. I wanted to change W3 to A8 but there's no way I will do that.

    @ TedJ : exactly!!

@ Goren : it feels really solid and I mean REALLY SOLID. Hinge are really good and the plastik they used is better than in A8. Besides did you see the specs?! T7400 + X1700 + 2GB!!! That's why it rocks!! I will try to get it ASAP for tests and get a loooot of pictures, A8 is on second place laptops to get.

    I can't decide between a V1J and something with a 7700 :(

@ robohgedhang : I will check it when I get this laptop for tests

@ mugen : depends what size you want, if 14" - W3, if 15,4" - hard to say, V1 or F3. F3 should be cheaper.

I tihnk that is a very strange observation.

The a8jm and the f3jm use the exact same plastic, in the exact same color even.

What the a8jm has is a silver finish on the lid. Other than that, its the same thing I mean exactly.

The f3jm is a s96, its the ensemble version of the barebones they sell in NA except it has the 512 mb 7600.

So anyhow, it is the very bottom of the ensemble models. A series is similar in chassis except really its got paint on it...

a8jm has a more expensive and brighter lcd screen than a f3jm as well although in general its the exact same in spec.

yeah I thought it was a bit odd too since the F3 series basically looked like an enlarged A8.. However the F3 is NOT the S96J.

I can't say I've seen a S96 first hand, but I was under the impression that the S96 was a barebones edition of the A6J. Based on the reports I've seen, the new F3J is the successor to the A6J with a new chassis.

Of course, with all that alphabet soup I may have it completely wrong...

Hahaha this thread is getting a little off topic, but anyways...

This has probrably been asked like a million times, but I can't seem to find it easily, so does anyone know when or will the V1J ever come to North America, specifically Canada?

Great pics by the way mastha

in what way is it not an s96 goren?

It uses all the same parts, motherboard lcd, chassis um... what else is there?

The lid is what was once pictured on the z96j that never came out.

unfortunately most of the parts im talking about have disapeared from here

    http://estore.asus.com/shop/category.asp?catid=457

however you can see, motherboard is called the f3ja motherboard, all the parts are called f3ja

    http://www.powernotebooks.com/specs/images/a2-24/

It looks almost exactly the same. Its possible that the f3j has the same finish as the a8jm actually now that i look at it, but all three machines look alike....

heres one of a8jm obviously not an exact like the other two... but same plastic, same colors. I think thats all I was trying to say. the a8jm and f3jm are the same stuff exactly.

have you actually took a look at the S96 and F3J? They look nothing alike. port lay out is completely different. speakers are located in different areas. They use different optical drives, the only thing they are alike is being 15.4" and silver.

btw, an inverter board is NOT a mother board, not to mention that everything else is called Z96 , not F3ja. Perhaps you need to re-examine the pics again.

Sorry stamar but have you ever seen both A8J & F3J together? They do not have exact same color. F3J's color is darker than A8J's. The black parts are... well.... both have same black color, but the upper lid and the palmrest are different, F3J is darker.

    um...

lol they are made of the same stuff and look very close to the same. Um... I looked at all the pictures just now thats why I showed them to you lol.

The parts on that page used to list about 8 f3ja parts but they are gone just that inverter is there right now.

Oh a different shade sure, but its the same thing. Wow I spent a lot of time to communicate clearly and the first response I get are just weird randoms lol.

They dont seem to have any build quality differences. The s96 and f3ja are almost the exact same machine as well. Different ports only barely, only barely different in the smallest ways.

sorry same stuff and looking close to the same does not mean the same thing. the A8 and F3 series obviously uses different boards. the 96 series and the F3 series uses different video cards. They use different optical drives and different keyboards as well. while some of the port locatoins are roughly in the same area, they are not the same. one you got stacked USBs, the other you got them spread apart. One has DVI the other doesnt have any. its enough differences to warrant them to be different notebooks. The A6 series looks very similar to the 96J and F3, but no one considers them to be the same.

why are all these great new merom core 2 duo models release in all these other countries and not one official asus stock c2d release for NA yet?

Then the V1j is confusing because some countries like UK got a yonah version while only a few countries including poland got the merom c2d V1j

An A8j (s i think) with merom is due out in the US soon and R1 before that but not sure about the F3 which does seem to have the amazing specs.

Are there any Polish online merchants that ship to the US?

Can you get one and i buy off you maybe?

If not Poland any other country that got merom version of v1j have a good site in english to purchase from that ships to the US? maybe Switzerland does as that was one of the other countries i believe that got a merom v1j.
