Just had to RMA the stock Fujitsu Harddrive on my Asus W3j. Is this a common problem with these drives or did I just get unlucky? (drive had bad clusters and read errors)

That's the first HDD RMA issue in as long as I can remember actually. We've only seen a couple dozen hard drive issues over the last six years... pretty uncommon if you ask me.

I have several friends who have had laptop hard drives fail after a few years of use. I've never had it happen with any of the machines I've been around. They are pretty durable beasts... Even my mom hasn't managed to kill one yet
You were just unlucky, I guess. It happens sometimes.
If you are lucky you might get a bigger drive out of the deal -

It depends on the hdd manuf. Toshiba being the worst by far. Fuji being the best and lowest rma. Very good drives. Hitachi and seagate are comparable. Stay away from toshi drives like a plague. Even if their mobile drives got better over the years their support and rma has not.

Asus customer support is awesome. Faxed in the RMA forms Tuesday, processed and shipped yesterday, the replacement was delivered this morning at noon. Free overnight shipping, and to top it off they sent me a brand new Hitachi travelstar 7200rpm drive to replace the stock Fujitsu.
