I really like the looks of the Asus S5N. While I don't mind an external DVD/CD drive, I'd like to get an ultraportable that has something better than integrated graphics (built in WiFi essential). There doesn't seem to be anything in that department right now, but I'm not in a hurry -- anyone know if Asus is likely to introduce something like that in the (relatively) near future?

Its like asking for a sub-compact car with a V-8 turbo engine.

It's not going to happen this year, I can assure you of that. I'm honestly surprise the the W3 is going to have the x600 in it...... at the same time, just because of the thinness of the V6, I'm surprised that has the x600 in it as well.....

The S5 doesn't have enough room (for the needed fan size, for added thickness, or in the battery to keep it ultra portable) ... You'd need to use the 3x battery all the time.

If you crack open an S5, it's like a can of sardines... it's almost like the outside of the system was vaccum packaged to the inside requirements.

    Thanks,
    Justin

I notice that the S5N is out of stock on the PROPortable website -- are you getting more of them back in?

How would you compare the S5N with an IBM X40 or some of the Sony Ultraportables?

Yah, well no harm in asking, is there? ;)

Yes, more S5's are coming in...... next week at the soonest. Asus is plum out of stock and we're waiting for more to come in from Tiawan.. The rebates have been moving these things really fast.

If you're looking for the S5, get an order in because we just get backordered and it's a cyclical process..

We had the S5 up against the X40 in Laptop magazine of last May I think...... We got shafted from a cover spot to the x40 because they "tested" the S5 as losing almost 40 minutes of battery life just between having the wifi turned on and off..... anyone with an S5 will tell you you might lose 5 minutes. It's a system I think other people with them should comment on

    Thanks,
    Justin

so, no chance we'll see an updated version of teh S5 or M5 with Intel Media Accelerator 900? i know it's not great graphics, but at least it's a LOT better than "intel extreme graphics"

If you are looking for an S5N right now (custom or not), we do have some in stock. If you order a standard one before 3 EST, they will ship the same day.

The S5a, available in no more than a month or so with use the 915 chipset. Yes, it's better than the Extreme Graphics, but you'll be paying for the newest unit when it comes out. Right now, you can't go wrong with the rebates on the S5's

Wow... now someone's talking about changing the onboard ram? That'd be one heck of a service, but you're not going to find anyone taking the soldered ram chip off the motherboard. That I'd be impressed with.
