In principle the mic and the camera shouldn't be connected to each other. So if you just want to record something with the mic, then open the software which you use for recording and start it (also telephone calls with skype work without camera)
Maybe check if in the settings of the realtek sound-manager the mic is activated (if you use the mic with camera already, then it should work anyway)

That's correct, remember using programs like TeamSpeak and having a push to talk button, or using Ventrilo, same thing. Both of these programs allow you to talk over the internet to those connect to the same server.

Even MSN Messenger you have an option stating Voice Conversation, you even have an option for Video Conferencing.

Recording programs also work too, that should help you out.

Start --> Control Panel --> (Switch to Classic View) Sounds and Audio Devices --> Audio Tab--> under Sound recording hit Volume--> select Mic and adjust volume

if that doesn't work then in the right portion of the task bar look for a little orange peaker icon. When you put ur cursor over it it should say "Realtek HD Audio Manager". Double click that. Go to the Mixer tab and under the Playback section use the arrows on the right to scroll over to Mic. Make sure there isn't an X on the speaker icon. Then raise the volume. Make sure that the Mic is selected under the record section and if you want enable Mic boost.

thanks people for your responses so far. i will certainly try your suggestions one by one :)

BUT if i haven't remembered incorrectly, the last time i tried the F2 voice recording thing on MSN it didn't work until i actually switched on the camera (the green LED was on... i did it through the asus life something, had it working on the background), fiddling with sound controls didn't work... and yesterday when i was playing CSS i pressed the mic button but no one heard, and i THINK it was the same problem...

oh well, again, will try out wot u guys suggested and see if it works. thanks!
