What is the PCMCIA device and driver listed as under "Device Manager" on the G1?

Looking to use a PCMCIA to ExpressCard adapter for a Sprint ExpressCard device and need to make sure the adapter is going to be compatible..

    Thanks,
    Stephen

Did you check the PCMCIA socket section of the device manager

    Hello,

There is no PCMCIA to ExpressCard adapter, and as its goes to the opposite way, sorry.

    I don't own a G1.
Looking at possibly getting one soon but the G1 has a PCMCIA slot...

We own another laptop with an ExpressCard (Dell)
looking at prob getting 2 more laptops this year and all but the Asus would have the same ExpressCard..

My wife works at Sprint. They just released a Novatel ExpressCard data device.
Novatel also makes an adapter so that ExpressCard can fit to the PCMCIA slot of older computers.

(So maybe I said it the wrong way before) appologies NetBrakr..

I just want to see what the device manager says about the slot and the chipset running it. It should be listed as CardBus but wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have a problem.. :)

    Thanks All,
    Stephen

Oh, no need to apologize. I was confused whateither you have OR you want the G1. Actually, PCMCIA and ExpressCard dont have the same technology, so yeah, its not backward compatible. Anyway, yea, you gonna have to select another notebook thats supports ExpressCard.

Ok... lets try this again.. :D

    Novatel makes the EX720 ExpressCard.

Sprint Mobile Broadband Express Card by Novatel Wireless (Merlin EX720)

Novatel makes an adapter to fit that ExpressCard into a PCMCIA slot..

I know the technologies are not the same but I'm guessing in this case it is a device specific adapter... meaning I know no other card will probably work..

I would go this route because every other laptop in the family would have ExpressCard.. But I really like the G1.. And I only want to pay for and have service on (1) connection device.

    see
    http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/1883/40/

I have quoted this from the above website.. "For now we can only go on our success history, which looks pretty good. The new ExpressCard/34 to PC Card adapter has worked with all chipsets, as long as they were CardBus"

    So..
Is the G1 PCMCIA listed as CardBus?

That is the simplicity of my question. ;)

    Thanks.

(you know I think im a dork.. aren't all PCMCIA listed as cardbus according to windows?) :D :D

Yes, and yes. Yes the G1's PCMCIA is listed as cardbus, and yes all PCMCIAs are listed as cardbus according to windows.

lol, and 2 be specific i even checked :pCMCIA adapter [listed as] "Rioh R/RL/5C474(II) or Compatible CardBus Controller"

I too wasn't aware of a PCMCIA to ExpressCard adapter, but loe and behold, this is defiantly worth it...if its not a scam of course. you mind telling us how this works out? TY

Hmm this is VERY interesting. I never know that there were such adapter.

To answer your question, yes, the PCMCIA is listed as Cardbus. A laptop that isn't CardBus compatible would have to be pretty darn old, since the standard dates back to 1995. :p

    Thanks for the info m477hew..

Looks like its going to be March before they are available.
    Wont be a scam.

EVDOinfo.com talks about it but they will be sold directly through Sprint as an accessory to the Device.

The wife let me know there isn't any info except some pictures and a Sku# but the other website says 49.99 with their coupon so I'm guessing $69.99 from Sprint.

We don't have Sprint EVDO anyway so we could only connect at 1xRTT until its turned on in our market.

The alternative to this is getting the opposite adapter for everyone elses computers from a 3rd party.

I kind of like the idea that this particular adapter is made by the same mfgr as the device itself.

    Thanks.

    (also thanks Netbrakr as well)
