    Hey all:

I been browsing around and have seen the "main" Asus reseller's discounts for the G1 and was wondering if any had stood out as above the rest? I qualify for a student discount.
    I've noticed ProPortable offers

    C9Tech I believe offers -$100 on the G1.

And MilestonePC offers the Asus router (don't quote me on that)

Anyone have any previous experience with the above resellers or anyone else? Also, what's the best deal you've seen on a G1 as of yet? I know I can get it from Newegg for the 'normal' price of $1795 + shipping.

    Thanks

I ordered the Asus G1p from PROPortable just last night. From what I've heard on the forums and elsewhere they seem to have a very good reputation. They are currently backordering the G1, but they should receive them within 2-3 weeks according to their website. :D I can't wait to get it!

Did you already pay for it or did you just "reserve one"? I would backorder it if it didn't charge immediately as I am waiting on Dell to refund me my money which will take around a week.

I don't think the Bluetooth remote will fit in the G1. Correct me if I'm wrong but the remote is ExpressCard while the G1 has a 1 x Type I/II PC Card Slot.

    Incompatible, right?

This notebook is on sale already??? Man, i should have call Dell and return my laptop before it's too late. Invest a couple hundred bucks more on this G1 is still better than What I have on my E1705.

Where is that offer from Proportable Website? I'm planning to get one too?

Should I phone them for more info about discounts?

Hey, I've been looking for a sweet notebook, and the G1 seems to be the perfect match. The specs are some of the best you can get in a 15.4" frame, and it even looks amazing! I just have a few questions for the lucky few who managed to get their hands on one.

-How is the battery life on it (~86% brightness, wi-fi on), as I've heard anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. Also, is there somewhere in Canada that you can buy an extra battery from?

-Is it uncomfortably heavy when it's being carried around in the backpack that comes with it? (Not a deal-breaker, I just want to know what to expect)

-What does the cpu clock down to when it's on battery? Also, how does running the laptop on battery affect performance? (I won't be gaming on battery - just hypothetical)

    Thanks!

I cannot comment on your first two issues, but I can answer the third question.

The CPU will automatically clock down to 1GHz @.95 volts when on battery. You can change if you want. Laptops run at their lowest multiplier most of the time, only jumping up to full speed when needed. Running the laptop on battery can affect performance, depending on what you are doing you may or may not notice a difference. Office work/web browsing you will likely not notice a change. Gaming on battery with the CPU & GPU underclocked will not be fun. Again, you can force the laptop to run at full speed on battery at the cost of run-time.

Heavy is in the eyes of the beholder(or in this case, the shoulders?) so it's really hard to say. Depending on your strength, stamina and what you will pack in your bag will matter if it will be 'heavy' for you.

If I recall, there is no larger battery for the G1, as the A6 chassis had only one eight cell battery, doubt there will be another.

I think I can easily help answer that for you. The best and worst thing about the G1 is that it's built on the A6 chassis...... Great because the underlaying chassis is not the cheapest one Asus has to build with, which is why this notebook is $1,800.00 USD instead of $2,200.00 USD. Bad because that chassis isn't built the best and is heavy for a 15.4".

Now, it's not heavy for a 15.4" gaming system...... but it is heavier than say the old M6 (Z70) which was nice to take around at only a hair over 6lbs. This tips closer to 7.

The battery is an A6 8 Cell at 4800mAh... That's not all that bad, when you consider the older A6's and M7's (Z71) had 8 Cell batteries at 4400mAh, however 4800mAh is a lot less than the 8 Cell in the W2p which is 5300mAh. However you could also keep in mind that the A8js has a 6 Cell rated at 4800mAh, just to help put it all into perspective. The A8js and G1p should both get about the same battery life given they both come stock with the same cpu and gpu - although you could subtract a little life for the bigger and better screen the G1 is powering.

I'm not going to be dumb enough to throw a number out there, because in my testing the numbers ranged considerably like those of the handful of members that have gotten their hands on them, but that's because of a much wider range of performance scaling.... This unit should have a 2 hour, 45 minute life under normal conditions a notebook like this would be used for..... I can certainly see getting as little as 2 or even a bit less... and scaling things back, I can see most people squeezing 3 hours and 3 minutes out of it at most, while a handful that really aren't using the system up to it's potential and are really good at tweaking, can probably manage 4 hours. If you can manage 4 hours, and you think that's how you'll be using it all the time, you probably got much more of a system than you need.... that's why I'd call this a 3 hour average.

I don't quite understand why people worry or even care about 1-2 pounds...if you really feel the difference it might be time to go workout a bit...just some friendly advice.

*This is not aimed at anyone here....it's just an observation.

In the end its not just 4 or 6 pounds, but with books, paper, mice, accessories, and whatnot, it'll be 10+ pounds, so every bit will count.

the weight difference comes into play not when its on your back but when you are removing it and setting it up. Opening it.

Its not a weight its a hand tool.
If your laptop weighs 10 pounds you have to move and open it with two hands.

if your laptop weighs around 4 pounds you can hold it closed in your fingertips of one hand.

Why? Are you serious or is this some kind of joke? Truly portable notebooks start and sub 6lbs... anything more than that, and you'd be lying if you say you'd take it everywhere with you. From there, you can feel every 1/4 pound.... It's why something like the W7 *seems* so much like the W3, but is actually very, very different because it's 3/4 of a pound lighter.

Now, when you're talking about a 15.4" or larger...... weight shouldn't be an issue, because regardless, it's going to be on a desk 90% of the time, if not more... It'll be moved to go on vacation, or go home from school... or something like that.... It won't be carried around everywhere you go... It will NOT be a system that you take to work and back home everyday... that just won't happen - it's too big.

With that said, I went to an architecture school where 3' - maybe 60lbs girls would carry 17" - 12lbs desktop replacements across campus and into studio everyday........... that's not the norm and we all know it. I've given advice to plenty of kids and their parents and at todays rate, for a college student to realistically take their laptop to class to type notes on a daily basis, the notebook has to be around 5 pounds..... 3 years ago, that number would be around 6... People are lazy, but realistically, anything larger than a 14" widescreen isn't going to make it to that 8am lecture on the other side of campus...

I think that under 5lbs, every bit makes a difference. The difference between Z33 w/stock battery and Z33 w/9-cell is huge, for instance. It's still tiny, though, and oh-so-solid when I pick it up, unlike virtually every other laptops I've handled... Probably because there is not a bit of open space anywhere inside of it ;)

The #1 thing I hear when I ask someone how they like their XPS or their Thinkpad Z61m or huge HP media machine is 'I wish it was smaller' or 'I wish it was lighter'. I don't think they truly appreciate the size and weight of what they are buying before they do so, because the retail laptop selection in most brick and morter stores suck. They bought online, or through the school, and they didn't know what they were getting. The sad thing is that marketing does a good job of convincing people they need these huge machines to do everything they want, when in reality that is not the case at all.

Me, I mocked up the footprint of several different 11-13.3" machines, found objects of similar weights, and made comparisons to machines I had access to before I made my purchase.

Here's your problem...... less than two dozen came into North America last week (those were gone before they showed up). The ETA Asus is giving on the second shipment is the week of the 18th to port.... which makes it probabably shipping to customers no earlier than the week after Christmas.... so getting one prior to that is going to be basically impossible (unless the shipment arrives earlier obviously). Now, beyond that, everyon is taking backorders and they're filling up quickly. We have an idea of what sort of allocation Asus will give us, but it could be more... could be less..... So, if you don't already have a backorder in, the chances of getting one before January are rather slim unless more G1's actually come in than expected.

Either way, no matter where you go, there are going to be people in front of you and without placing a backorder, these will be hard to keep in stock for the next 5-6 weeks.

imagine if they had brought them all to market BEFORE christmas.

would have been a lot of money.

A huge part of the market is looking exactly for this machine right now. College kids visiting home.

Not a wait a few weeks type of customer.

Totally.... why do you think they flew two dozen over here for last week? It was to get people to realize they exist and although they may need to wait until closer to new years or maybe the first week of January for them, they'll still buy them..... If this was any other model, we probably wouldn't see a release at this time of year.

Taking note of the weight issue - weight itself is objective as a 7 lb laptop will be 7 lb for everybody *but* a 7 lb laptop is not the same for a kid who weighs 105 lbs compared to an active weight-lifter who benches 150+ lbs or curl 80 lbs.

With that said, I have to jump on the wagon with RoadRacer as 1 lb (or even 2 lbs) will not dramatically make much of a difference when considering a typical backpack filled with books and other junk will amount to around 10-20 lbs to begin with.

The only other moment where weight matters is when you take the laptop out of the bag and put it onto a table (or lap). I am sure nobody complains about "too much weight on the laps" and I've never heard anybody complain about not being able to lift a 10 lb object. So in summary, a moot issue for a handful, a critical issue for others.

We usually ship out pretty fast, we are only 5 minutes away from Asus, we usually start shipping the 2nd day after Asus receives new arrival. The question for the current G1 is how many units a reseller can get, the G1 and G2 shipment is already on the way to NA, but even Asus NA notebook director doesn't know how many G1 in the shipment now.

If G1 won't arrive too late, I will try my best( including upgrade shipping method at my cost ) to make sure as many as possible of our customers to receive them before Christmas.
