    Hi there,

I love my nearly two year old G1. 6 weeks ago while playing a game the screen went crazy, and on reboot while I could hear the boot noises, and the screen light up black - thats all it did. I suspect the GPU went Kaput.

UPS picked up under warranty and shipped for repair. PC came back a week later (fast I thought) with a note saying they replaced the main board. Turned on, screen working - yippee! Wait, whats that noise? Sounds like a motorbike starting up. Noise starts 3 seconds into boot and keeps going the whole time. Its coming from the back left, sounds to me (I'm no expert) like a crazy broken fan.

I send it back again with a polite note explaining the problem -the noise is 10 times louder than it ever was. They return it 10 days later (still a good turn around time I think). Note says they have replaced the main board. Noise is still there (argh!). Not quite as bad as before, but worryingly loud. The harder I work the PC, (eg graphics intensive games) the worse it gets. There is no way you could use it in an office, it would drive people mad.

    Question:
Is this normal now? Would a new motherboard be different and much more noisy than my 22 month old one? Are the fans built in? Could I open it up and try some wd40? Should i send it back again and cross my fingers?

    All advice appreciated! Thank you.

PS: When they sent it back the first time all three rubber feet from the back of the PC were missing. Clearly this doesn't affect the PC but it does slide all over my desk and I really look after my PCs so I was a bit cross. When I sent it back the second time I also stuck a post-it to the screen asking nicely if they would put the rubber feet back on as they ripped them out in the first place. Of course PC came back with no rubber feet - argh!!!

If I were you, and had to turn the lap in 3 times or more, I'd ask for a replacement! you could suggest a G50, that'd be nice, no? :D

Anyway, I dont kno exactly what the problem is but maybe it has somtin to do with the cpu...

btw: some people from the USA already managed to get their replacement G50V(t?)

    Goodluck!

Agreed this looks like bad service. Why would they need to replace the motherboard for strange sounds that can only come from moving parts?!? And the rubber feet...

I suggest you try to get a replacement as said above. I believe 3 times repairs entitles you to a replacement in ASUS' policy.

    Thank you for your replies

I've spoken to ASUS customer services (again) and they've asked me to email them the full story before I send it back for a third time, which I have just done. I'll complete the thread when I hear back for them in case the info helps anyone else

PS apologies if I posted in the wrong place originally

Thought I'd just update this thread.

2 months later and my Laptop is finally back. Its a long and painful story which I won't bore you with but ASUS had my PC for 5 weeks (3rd repair), most of which they had actually lost it and couldn't tell me what was happening at all. It came back and its still making way too much noise and still missing the rubber feet that were pulled off by the repair centre during the first repair.

Anyone else having the problem of excessive fan noise in the G1? I know its not right because if you lift the right side of the laptop 5 cms off the ground so it is at an angle the noise stops immediatley. sadly its difficult to type like this ;)

A specific question - does anyone know the names or office of the senior management of ASUS in the UK so I can write to them and complain?

:sigh: ASUS UK. You may want to have a look at the "ASUS Warranty Repair" thread for people in similar situations to yours. Maybe you can find some contact information also but I don't remember specifically any contact info being posted.
