Hello guys !
I'm a canadian student in exchange in France, I'm planning to buy the G1 but it has two different screen resolution here:
1- 1280 x 800
2- 1680 x 1050
What's the difference between those two ? which one is better ?
And also, is it possible to play any hd content with these resolutions? In 1280 x 720p for example..
Thank you

So in France, the G1 has two different screen resolutions?
Here in North America we have only 1, which is 1680x1050, are you going to purchase in Canada or in France?
When using low resolution things appear to be bigger, like Icons on the desktop, words and letters, you have less real-estate, which means you can put less stuff on to the screen.
With a higher resolution, you have a huge amount of real-estate, but all the icons and text is small, for some with poor eye sight, you will find that their head has to get closer to the screen to see and read.
Of course with a higher resolution screen you can decrease the resolution, or even increase the DPI in windows to help you see text better, which is something some poeple do.
In terms of HD Content, are you talking about watching HD movies/DVDs and TV Shows, the resolution of the screen does not matter, but the more the better since you have had the movie running plus also have a website on the side.
Basicaly resolution of the screen will not affect movies or TV shows, a higher resolution screen may allow you do to more at once, like two word document side by side, or code and program, stuff like that.
In terms of gaming, in my honest opinion, screens can effectively scale games, without the loss of performance, so therefore you can play games at high resolution or low resolution with higher graphic settings and things should be fine in terms of image quality, however many also disagree with this comment. -
Yes in France they are available in two resolutions, I'm not going back to Canada in christmas so i'm thinking about purchasing it here. However, 1680 x 1050 screen resolution is less available, that's why i posted my thread. I'll have to wait until January if i want one like this.
Like you said, i can still purchase it with a higher resolution and decrease it if everything is too small, right ?
For HD content, as an example, I would refer to www.apple.com/trailers, this HD trailers are available in 480, 720p and even 1080p. I was wondering if the laptop can display one of these resolutions.
Thanks ! -
Both can display up to 720p. Neither can do true 1080p since the horizontal res on that is 1920.

Yeah you don't get up to full HD res on a computer lcd until you get up to WUXGA which is 1920 x 1200.... WSXGA+ is close at 1680 x 1050, which is obviously 30 pixels shy of 1080 - and honestly that's like less than a 3% difference on a small 15.4" screen.... which is not something you're going to notice.

Well thanks guys for your answers it seems that i will go for the higher screen resolution. I don't mind waiting a bit more till it is more available in the market.
Thanks for your help ! -
Doesn't matter if the screen is not HD since the G1 isn't even equpped with a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD reader. If you even have the money to buy a standalone player then you probably have enough money to buy a real HDTV in the first place. So a moot issue.

And more to the point, the lack of a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drive would not hinder the ability to watch HD content, since there is a bunch out there on the web at 720p. -
Apple trailers are HD, arent they ?? there a encoded in a hd format to display an hd content, i asked the question to know if the lcd of the notebook is able to reproduce this hd or if a specific HD video card is needed and an HDTV too.

Edit - I believe the Geforce 7700 on the ASUS G1 does have the hardware H.264 decoding, but I'm not positive.
