Hi all, I'm contemplating between a G1 or G2 for my next purchase. I have a W2J right now, not really a gaming rig, but does well with HL2 and HL2 EP1 (ATI X1600 256MB). I do like the 17 inch screen of the W2J, but it is a bulky machine more suited to sitting on the desk than going for a walk. But, I do love this machine...it's like walking on to a Star Wars set. I would go for G2 with the 17 inch screen, because I really like my W2's 17" even though its only 1440x900. What are the pluses/minuses of of 15.4in 1650x1050? verses 17in 1440x900 and NVIDIA go 7700 vs. ATI X1700. Realizing I can't go wrong with either, I would just like some opines.
BTW - I did read the G1 Lounge thread and most everyone seem to be happy with their choice, but I haven't happened on a G2 thread. Guess I was just tired from Excessive Surfing Syndrome...I wonder if that is a disease - ESS.

Remember the G1 has a 1680x1050 WXSGA+ screen, whereas the G2 only has a 1440x900 WXGA+ screen. Also, the G1 has the better video card (Geforce Go 7700) compared to the G2's Radeon X1700, despite the fact that the G1 is smaller.
I feel like the G1 is the "better" computer, generally. Not factoring in screen real estate, the G1 is more portable, more powerful, and cheaper. -
I love my G2P, it works great for what I use it for. I think that if size is a factor then get the G1, if you like a bigger screen to watch movies and such get the G2. I have not had one problem with mine. I didn't like all the crapware that came on it, but once that is gone it works great. I don't have a bad thing to say about mine. I am glad that I got WinXP over Vista.

Thx Fren, I think I want to go for the smaller lappy, I was just wondering if the difference made anyone unhappy.
-
What did u think of the size? My w2J is a beast of a machine, I like it a lot but it definetly is not something to sling around with. So, is there a big difference betwix G1 n G2 weight-wise?

No problem, youda. I'd do some shopping around for the best price, or better yet, WAIT for Santa Rosa to come around next month. Asus will refresh the G1 to Santa Rosa/DX10 technology by early June at the latest, which means you'll have a faster Core 2 Duo processor (probably the T7300) and a DX10 compatible graphics card (probably the Geforce Go 8600) in the G1.
The cheapest I've seen the G1 currently is around $1800, offered at both btotech.com and gentechpc.com. Last time I checked, MilestonePC and ProPortable both do price matching. -

Also the rule of thumb is if you need a laptop now, get it and don't look back, but if you think you can wait, then wait, Santa Rosa is just around the corner and it may be worth while for you to wait.
When compariing the G1 and G2 in terms of overall performance and even graphical performance you will find them to be roughly the same. As you can see in the game testing I have done in the review.
The X1600 is weaker than both Go 7700 and X1700, but by not much...so if you want more graphical performance you will want to wait for Santa Rosa. -
My feeling is you want a lot more performance and if you consider the x1600 ok, then you will be after the go7900 or better. This is found in the Dell E1705 for a good price. -
As radditz said, the E1705 is a great choice if you can handle the 17" size. You can easily configure it pretty highly(incl 7900GS) for under 2000, and if you want even more of a discount try the Small Business version of the E1705(9400?, I think).

If you're looking for the best available, try the Sager NP5760 from a place like powernotebooks.com, which comes with a Geforce Go 7950GTX (currently the most powerful graphics card you can get in a notebook) and can be equipped for under $2500.

Thanks all. I think I will take Fren's advice about waiting for Santa Rosa. I have worked with Dells at work for years and I have a very negative impression of their build. Maybe it's just me, but I hear complaints from colleagues too.

SANTA ROSAAAAAA !!! It'll be worth the wait.
I plan to get the G1 with its first upgrade from MilestonePC. DX10 on this machine and a good price tag will make a true winner for 2007.
Right now I got a Dell 6400/1505 for almost a year and it got pretty decent graphics with the 1400 Ati card and 2 Gb of RAM, but for true hardcore gamers the G1 is the definite laptop. At least for the price. The specs are great too. You wont need a better computer for at least a year.
The 2 years global warranty is a must now for travelers and can be pretty useful after a year or some wear out and some heavy gaming.
I'll look no further, I have been an Asus fan for 6 years and now a super cool laptop has come around and its time to upgrade.
