I know the LG gets better benchmarks with standard setup, and won the "Red Dot Award" (which I could give two ****s about), but how does the hype compare to the similarly speced G1, any thoughts?

LG charges premium for their design and slim architecture. considering you're unwilling to give up more than 1 **** about design, i don't see the rationale behind why you'd even compare the G1 to the S1 to begin with. the two notebooks are targeted at different markets. if a notebook is similarly spec'ed then the only logical difference would be what's on the outside.

Which are the two markets? Business gamer and college gamer? Is the S1 more comparable to the V1 series?
-
Where do you see similar specs? When I looked it up I am seeing an older Core Duo.
-
LG S1 is probably geared towards business professionals who need high end graphics solutions for design/media work along the lines of MacBook Pro users. If i had the money i'd go for XPS 1710 but that's just me hehe.

I like the VX2 lambo personally =P

specwise, G1 will best the S1

Not in the benchmarks though =/

well the S1 and G1 are similarly speced if u want it as a gaming machine. both have the C2D CPUs, both have nice styling but the G1 is a gaming style while the S1 is just overall style. both employ similarly powered graphics cards, the go7700 is faster but not by much. the S1 has an encryption chip and fingerprint reader but it still isn't as conservative as your typical business solution. in fact its styling is more on par with consumer notebooks than business ones. if you were to compare them on features and what you use them for, they can be quite comparable.
for the typical user who wants style + games, these two laptops are comparable and are targeted for them. i know the S1 probably comes with vista business (not sure if that's just optional) but they are not as business like as to not be comparable to the G1.
Both companies make good laptops so you would have to go with price and features and which suits you or which you would like to use features-wise -
Both are good laptops you can't really complain. S1 is more expensive but is slimmer and has a better design imho. and the piano-black airbrushed look on the top is really sleek.

S1 looks better, is slightly lighter and has some features (silent mode and numpad). But G1 provides a good value for money (not in Iran though
) and has a slightly better GPU (though the 512MB dedicated V-Ram might have a higher performance in future titles).

I just realised this whole thread may be moot as the G1S is right around the corner and LG hasn't even so much as mentioned refreshing the S1 yet (though I know they will.)
-
The G1S is getting the 8600GT, I somehow can't see the S1 getting anymore than an 8600GS. Last time the S1 had a X1600 whereas the G1p had a 7700..
-
I believe (no claims) that the S1 will get the ATI HD 2600/XT instead... And that might be on par or even more powerful than the Giant Trolling
-
The S1 did have the X1600 and the G1 the go7700 however the S1 was released long before the G1, so by that time the X1700 had probably not been released yet. We will see what will be on offer next.
-
Besides the "piano finish" on the S1's lid and the G1's flashing lights. Key differences may include the fact the S1 has a full number pad on the keyboard, no built-in webcamera and the lid doesn't have a clasp of sorts to hold the laptop together. The G1 is made by Asus. =D
I've owned a S1 for months now and I'm quite happy with it. Not sure about how scratch resistant the G1 is but my S1 lid has minor scratches. -
As for the 7700 vs X1600, as I said the difference is not much, the thing that might make a difference in future might be the V-Ram (though I would like to know if a 7700 with 256 + 256 existed, how much difference would it have with the 512MB 7700) -
-
The Vista ATI Catalyst drivers didn't support X1700.It was frustrating for many people.
