    Hey all,

I just recently purchased my new G1 laptop which came with Vista Home. I wanted to install XP Pro and I seem to have everything set except the buttons on the top and bottom of the keyboard. I tried installed the ATK0100 software and it doesn't seem to be working. I also tried installing Wireless Console 2 but it keeps crashing. I downloaded both programs from Asus website and it doesn't seem to want to work. Am I doing anything wrong? Thanks for any help.

Try here for your wireless console and here for your ATK0100. also make sure you download the INF for your chipset. I'm giving you these on the assumption that the drivers you tried were Vista specific - these are either XP specific or work for both.

Thanks! Both of them worked. I couldn't figure out how to or where to look thru intel's website to get the rest of the drivers. I downloaded the INF for my chipset already but didn't know I could get teh ATK0100 and wireless console from there.

I only played with Vista for about 10 min before I just formatted the whole computer. Not really into playing with vista. I might do a dual boot later on.

I see you have the new Asus G1, hoping to pick your brain a little and see how you like it. I too have seen the system listed with Vista installed, and really would prefer, as you do, to keep XP Pro as my primary OS. I've got it on my current laptop (Dell 5150), and it hasn't disappointed me yet.

I'm most interested in the Core 2 Duo processor and the dedicated Nvidia 512MB graphics card, way better than cheap "shared memory" systems, as I do video editing, and occasionally need to render the finished edits. On my current laptop (Dell 5150/P4 Celeron M) I can do it, but it struggles pathetically and tortures the system, it takes FOREVER. It's like trying to mow an acre of tall grass with a weedwacker, when you need a big riding mower! The processor is totally maxed, and you could use the fan for a hair dryer!

My desktop PC is much better (Athlon X2 4400 dual core), but eventually I plan to switch to the Intel Core 2 Duo/Extreme there as well. Rendering on any laptop will never replace the desktop, but it's really handy to be able to do it when you're away at an event and need to get it done.

Another thing with most laptops is the HD is usually 5400 rpm, at least now they have switched to SATA drives. My other upgrade would be to swap out the installed 160 GB 5400 rpm SATA drive for a Seagate Momentus 100 GB 7200 rpm SATA drive, $119 from Newegg.com. Why? First, video editing/rendering requires a quick HD to avoid dropped frames, and overall machine responsiveness picks up because the heads get to/from data faster at higher rpm's. Yes, it's a bit smaller than the 160GB, but I've got an external 300 GB portable USB drive for that already.

Hope your new G1 has impressed you. What were your first thoughts when it came out of the box, once you got it set up and running the way you like? Guess I wanna know everything, mostly how do you feel about it, and do you think I'd like it for what I want to do with it? I'm happy with my current 15.4" screen size, don't need a 17" monster, but performance is an issue for me. The only extra $$$ I'd need to shell out is a copy of XP Pro and to upgrade to the 7200 rpm drive. Where did you buy your G1 from, any specials going on? Best I have found is Newegg for $1898.

Thanks for your time and opinions, hope you love your system. Sorry I got carried away a bit with my post! But that's why the forum's here right?

This might be a bit long, but in general I love using my G1.

I came from using an XPS Gen2 and a 710m. I loved both for what they can do. I was gaming every weekend with the XPS when I visited my gf. I lugged the 710m during the weekdays for work all through Manhattan.

When I first got the G1, I was very impressed by the styling of it. I figured it would look more...gamer. The amount of green didn't really seem like it would stand out as much. I could see myself bringing this laptop into company meetings and using it there. I don't see it standing out as much compared to others except that the styling seems a bit sharper to me.

Turning on the G1, I was impressed with the whole Vista OS for about 5 min before I started to erase everything and install XP Pro. It then took me about a day to figure out the drivers and software that was compatible with XP instead of Vista but dashboardy101 pointed me in the right direction. After everything was a set I loved my G1 even more. Everything is running perfectly. I could not be happier.

As for use and performance, I wasn't really expecting much from it, was trying to be realistic and not get my hopes up. But so far it surpassed everything I wanted. I've only installed Guild Wars and Supreme Commander on this and they both run it smoothly for me. I'm not much into benchmarks, as long as the game plays nicely and has liveable graphics I'm happy. The graphics have been stellar to me, it was even able to match the graphics on my XPS with the ultra 6800 and my desktop's Radeon x1900. I played everything on 1280x1024 with AA turned to 4x and details on high. Everything ran perfectly for me. I can't complain about the gaming performance.

For hard drive speed, I used a 60gb 7200rpm in my XPS and while it seems to load faster for me, I love the storage space of the 160gb. I can't really see myself complaining about the 5400rpm on this hard drive. It works for me..have not really noticed that much of a difference in speed for me. But then I'm just a general user not much into performance. I just want it to be capable of handling anything I wanna throw at it.

I've only been able to use it for the past 3 days and I haven't found any problems with the G1, I carried it throughout Manhattan on Thursday and Friday and haven't noticed the weight as much as I thought I would. I've played games during the nights and not seen any problems come up.

Thats about it for my ramblings. Hope it helps.
