First of all I have to apologize for making yet another thread about this, but I couldn't find anything related to this in any other existing XP install thread.
I have to say I was surprized how painless the XP install and set up was after all. So far I have close to zero regrets about this after painstakingly trying to get along with Vista for two months. So far I've ran into two problems with XP, both somewhat disturbing.
1) I have all the ACPI drivers and such set up, but if I set my hard drive to go to sleep after any time in idle mode, it doesn't wake up when I continue using the laptop. Even more interestingly, I can operate in Windows like normal, but everything happens V-E-R-Y slow. I don't know where the information is read from (I suspect HDD still, isn't it spinning very slow even when "turned off"?) but I can barely use the turn off hdd function when the resume works like this. This isn't really a problem but in a long run I don't want to kill my drive by forcing it to keep power on all the time.
2) explorer.exe has a nasty habit of performing an illegal operation a lot. This always has something to do with mDNS----.exe (which I couldn't find anywhere). Sometimes I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL -> Shutdown to get past this but usually it just shuts itself down and restarts and everything works again. I've also noticed ZoneAlarm blocking this mDNS----.exe from doing/accessing something every now and then.
Any help would be appreciated. The 2nd issue only came up after installing ZA, so I'm thinking to get rid of it just to test if that'd help.

2) Uninstall ZA since it sucks... Use Avast instead -
Are you using just the ZA firewall or a security suite? If just the firewall, do uninstall it and simply use Window's own app until your issues are sorted.
BTW, could mDNS----.exe be mDNS responder.exe? If so, it's a process from Apple, but I can't remember its purpose. Google can probably help you out, though. -
Yes, mDNSresponder.exe was it, gotta check with Google. ZA is just the firewall. Display drivers are v163.71 from laptopvideo2go.

1. Don't worry, both Vista and XP access the HDD in a frenzy so it will rarely ever get a chance to spin down anyway. Besides, there are studies that say that constantly-used HDDs survive longer than otherwise.
2. Try the other suggestions (removing ZA). Sygate Personal Firewall is a good option for a lightweight firewall in XP; Symantec Antivirus (an old one) is a good lightweight antivirus option. Check my Windows XP guide (linked in my signature) for Sygate PF. Symantec Antivir is unfortunately not available for download but I can email it to you if you wish. -
lapingultah could you tell me how did u instal xp on yours G1S?
Names and links of some drivers you used? I'm trying to do that since yesterday and i can't... The bigest problem for me is graphic card driver...
Sorry for my bad english -
-
Theros i did it already....but... i installed xp (dual boot with vista), it starts but i can't install graphic card driver
it's because there is no 'display adapters' 'icon' (or 'section') in device menager!! so i can't unistall drivers instaled during instalation of windows!. That's the bigest problem for me now and it's wired....
I was trying to instal drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com but it says that the drivers are not good for my device... -
Found the thread again after all!
Now I've had another rather weird issue lately. The wireless router this household is using is quite crappy to be honest, and can't handle that much load usually. Usually this causes one of the WLAN users to lose connection and it can only be "fixed" by restarting the router, after that everything is fine. The problem is that whenever someone turns off the router and I lose my WLAN connection, rpcss.dll performs illegal operation and my computer is forced to reboot.
This doesn't happen if I'm logged out to CTRL+ALT+DEL password screen AND the lid is closed. If the lid is open, I usually find the laptop rebooted when I come back to it. All this really beats me and Google didn't give me any help regarding the whole rpcss.dll and how could I prevent this... Any ideas welcome again.
[edit] Changed the RPC service properties so no reboot is done automatically, only the service should restart itself. Yet to see if this works but hoping for the best... [/edit]
