I got my G1S today (YAAY!), and although it's pretty and all, I have a very strange problem with the optical drive. I have put into the drive music CDs, game CDs and game DVDs that work fine on my ancient laptop. Although the name and used space for these discs shows up in the 'Computer' window (the Vista version of My Computer, for those without Vista), there is no autorun, nor have I managed to find autorun. What's more, even attempting to Explore the discs will yield a blank page, then the computer will ask about formatting the blank disc! Despite all this, the computer can definitely read the discs, as I have been able to use the Command Prompt to change directories to the drive, get a list of the files, and then type in (usually) 'setup' to install the game. The game then works fine with the CD/DVD in the drive...
Any ideas about what could cause this or how to fix it. I have got around it, but it is VERY annoying to have to use the Command prompt every time.

How old are the disks, is it possible that Vista just simply doesn't like them?

Seems more of a software/firmware problem than a hardware problem. Have you tried using XP?
-
No, I haven't tried XP, partly because the G1S ships with Vista (Home Premium, in my case), and I am wary since there is no Asus support or drivers for XP for the G1S.
Does NO-ONE have a similar issue? -

Try disabling and re-enableing the drive through the Device Manager, then try updating the drivers, then see if there is some sort of firmware update (usually not for optical drives). If all of that fails try reinstalling Vista clean, if it isn't too much trouble... Hope this clears up!!

I *think* there might have been one CD or DVD which my G1S didn't seem to want to read. Let me check when I get home later today and I'll try and recall what it was...

I think I've had a similar problem as you (however I don't know how to fix it sorry). I just got my Asus g1s two days ago (grats on the laptop btw), and I tried to install Warcraft III and Starcraft. I happened to install Warcraft III but when I went to play, it kept giving me the "make sure the disc is in the hard drive" and it surely was. I think it is Vista since I'm hearing it has problems with some games. If someone could help us figure this out, that would be appreciated.

I can't delete files (well, I've only tried certain files), move files, or even copy files from elsewhere into certain directories. I'm beginning to think a reinstall might be the only option at this point that doesn't involve me inadvertently destroying my nice new Asus laptop, whose fault I really believe it isn't.
I friggin' well want to be able to use my computer, dammit. If I put a CD in the drive, you can bet I want it to DO something. If I double click on an .exe you can bet I want it to run without changing my mind a second later and thanking MS for the confirmation screen that pops up a moment after I just so stupidly tried to open a program I didn't actually want to open.
Sorry - rant over for now. Vista may be better in some ways, but from where I'm sitting it's a worse PITA than Windows ME was - at least that version of Windows let me manipulate files in between the frequent crashes. -
my friend just got his g1s yesterday. he ran into a similar problem. we tried to install warcraft 3, only to discover that it isn't windows compatible. whenever we tried to play the game, its like the optical drive didn't recognize there was a disc in it. anyway, yes it might be a compatibility problem. make sure the games you want on it are supported by vista.

i could install wc3 but when i try to played it, the drive wouldnt detect it. so i had to download a no cd crack =/
-
...and after my rant a couple of posts back, ALL my problems were solved (optical drive issues, not being able to copy/move/delete files) by ONE SENTENCE.
Anyway, all solved now, I can play my new games without having to change CDs/DVDs each time, and I hope that the above sentence helps someone else too. -
Hi,
I'm got my G1S yesterday, and I've been installing and tweaking it out, but just now, after coming home from the movies and turning on the machine, my DVD-RW drive on the G1S isn't showing up in windows.
I go to the Device Manager and it has the Caution icon (Yellow Triangle with the !) on it.
I tried the install drivers option and I've tried disabling it and re-enabling it and I also tried the option under properties to find a solution.
I can't seem to do a windows update, it's giving me some kind of error, probably because i'm on a firewall through the wireless. Anyways I've checked the BIOS and the BIOS reads it just fine.
I can't seem to find a firmware for the HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA Device or the YK7044S CKM4881N SCSI CdRom Device.
Can someone toss me a few ideals or help me out with this problem? -
Did you try the stuff mentioned in this thread? Specifically the disabling UAC.
-
yea I did everything, but now after a few restarts, and a few cold boots, it seems windows had properly reinstalled the drivers, somehow, and now it works.
Weird..... -
I'm putting these down to teething issues. It's oh so beautiful when I play the games. -
heres is what im experiencing: wc3 and diablo 2 both only work after a reboot. once u quit, the optical drive will not detect the CD. try it out u'll probably find the same problem on ur g1s.

i too am having some issues with the optical drive on my new g1s. what i'm seeing is that it reads cds and dvds just fine at first, but when i try to install games, regardless of the game, it starts skipping inside the tray and rotating back and forth, but stops reading the disc properly. this freezes the install on whatever game i'm trying. i have tried disabling the uac, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers numerous times. as of yet, i still have only been able to install black and white 2, but i think that was a fluke. any ideas?

that User Access Control is a bunch of BS I dont like it "Are you sure you would like to change your background" Yes d@mn!t stop asking me
**sorry for my foul mouth** -
Hmm yes the idea behind UAC is good but the implementation in Vista seems... doubtful. I say that because many, many users will disable it simply because it is annoying. So it kind of defeats its purpose by being over-zealous with all the popups and questions.

turning off UAC wont do anything for you except eliminate the need to run some programs as administrator.
Is it just me or are there ALOT of G1S threads about broken things....
everything from, grainy screens, to bios, to optical drives, to heat issues....
Thats not good. or is this normal for every notebook that falls into the hands of alot of people (because the G1S sold alot of units so you cant compare the# of complaints threads directly to a much more scarce notebook. more people = more problems) -
I have a great G1s. Shame Vista sucks right now. -

I love my Vista Ultimate x64 I have no issues and x64 is well known to have more problems than the x86 version.

Maybe it's Home Premium edition then? As I said, I cannot believe that as-installed an OS won't let you access a CD you yourself put in the drive, unless you go to the command prompt. That is insanity.
