I have a 7200RPM harddrive and 3gb of ram but my 3dmark06 score is only 3816. I've seen that stock gets around 3860. Why is mine below that? shouldn't it be a bit higher since I have 3gb of ram?

Mr._Kubelwagen More machine now than man
That's not much of a difference. I'd be more worried if it was like 3500. Try updating your drivers maybe?
-
the hard drive wont have any affect on your score. If you have 3 gigs of ram i assume you have 1 2gb stick and 1 1gb. which means no Dual channel, that would bring your score down.
-
Your laptop is fine. Uninstall your crap/bloatware.
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
1% difference between reported stock numbers and your score is within the margin of error for the test, and could easily be due to variations in background processes you have from whatever test unit generated the "stock" value... most people tend to get slightly different numbers for each run too. The unit is fine.

*nods*
3DMark06 scores can vary about 300 points even running on the same system under similar conditions.
Update your drivers, and make sure all background processes are off, etc. I wouldn't be worried about a 3DMark score personally. They mean nothing. My desktop got a 10105 in it but ran EQ2 very poorly. My stock G1S can play the game at higher settings without a problem. -
"only 3816"... it's already a good score, don't worry ;>
-
My G1s use to get 3809, but now I'm only getting 3512
-
Which version of drivers do you have? -
-
try it again?
-
i'm using 163.44 and left the startup processes running. But i heard that 3 gb of ram outperforms the 2gb because there is 2gb of shared ram and then an extra gb of ram to make things faster.

Try some actual games. 3DMark wont really help you there, since I don't think it will use turbocache, but your games will.
-
Well first of all make sure that the GPU temperature is not too high.
That could explain a decrease in performance. -
As others have mentioned, temperature can have an effect on the 3dMark06 score, at least on the G1S.
Best way to test this is to shut off your system, and once it has cooled down run the 3dMark06 benchmark immediately after it boots. You'll get a higher score doing this then you would once the system has been idling at higher temperature.
I think this is some form of internal "clockdown" when heat reaches a certain point. As far as I know there's no control over it, so it might be some type of BIOS or Firmware level adjustment.
It isn't just 3dMark06 btw, when my system is hot Windows Experience Index gives me a 5.4 for the graphics rating (not Aero rating), when cool I get a 5.5 at least. -
I agree. I did the test at an idle temperature, I get 4800 in 1024*768 and about 3850 in 1280*1024
Then, I stop the computer and I start him after an hour. At boot, I got 3940 with 163.44, in 1280*1024, with stock configuration (Windows Vista).
The temperature affects really the performances of the 8600M GT. -
my score is 5160 but my core clock is 600

sounds about right for a stock G1S, but there is some tuning you can do to get as much as 37% higher performance out of it. Out of the box, mine was 3600. now its 4937.
G1S 3dmark06 score seems low
