Anyone here using the S/PDIF port for their speakers? and have pictures of your set up?

I'm planning on getting some Axiom M3 speakers which I would like to hook up to my G1S. How would I go about doing this?

I did some research on my own, found that I would need either a receiver or an amp. G1S > Digital Out Cable > Reciever/Amp > Speakers

The receivers i've been looking at are all audio+video and are big machines.

It's a bookself/stero/home theater speaker (those ones that you use for surround sound), NOT computer speakers. You'll need a receiver (which is at least as big as your notebook) to power the speakers and optical out won't do you any good as you just have 2 channels.

You may have seen them hook up Logitech computer speakers or some other powered speakers to their computers. You need a receiver to power the Axioms. A computer won't power the speakers.

I agree regarding the book shelf speakers needing power. unless you are planning to use them in a permanent location, then it may be a difficult choice.

As far as the digital out, if you hook it up to any outboard receiver, the DA converter will be better than the laptops internal DA. I do this with my desktop in my office. I have it hooked up to my old home theater Harman/Kardon AVR via digital out. it makes higher bit rate mp3/wma content sound great due to a much better DA (digital to analog converter) and high amperage power, and a nice set of MB Quart towers. I dont use it for anything other than stereo playback.
