I have been messing with this for over a day now, and still no luck... I have attempted every BIOS update method and none seem to work. I am attempting to update to BIOS 300 from 202 in order to be able to install Ubuntu since I have over 2 GB of RAM...

So here's what is happening, I have attempted the USB key method, but to no avail, the Flash BIOS utility does not recognize it (yes I formatted it to FAT32), so I used Asus liveupdate as someone suggested and all seemed well (it downloaded, recognized that I had a lower version, updated it and told me to restart and Reset to default, which I did), then the Splash screen comes back and right after I get some sort of weird error saying that the Gigabit test failed (Media Disconnected) then it says it is exiting the XPE (or something to that effect) and finally goes back to windows. The Asus liveupdate states that the update failed, and when I check my bios again it is indeed back on version 202 (although when I go into right after the update it applied, it does state it is on 300)...

I am at a loss here and dont want to play with it further since I have a feeling I am on the fringe of screwing up my laptop.

Any ideas? Thanks all in advance

Since version 300 is for Penryn support only. Unless you are upgrading your processor to the new Penryn's, I don't suggest upgrading the BIOS since it does not fix or patch any other problems with the G1S.

Yeah, but I've been told by a few people on this and other BBS that I will need to update to BIOS 300 in order to be able to install Ubuntu since I have 3 GB of RAM installed.

BTW, when I tried to update to 203, it failed as well with the same error message.

Nevermind, i was able to work it. I had to go into the BIOS after the update, close it down, then restart and go into it again and THEN Restore default... works like a charm and Ubuntu looks like it's ready to rock n' roll... Thanks again

Yeah, for future reference those "weird errors" were because the boot from LAN was activated in the default settings of the new BIOS.

And don't use ASUS Live Update, it can mess up the BIOS update quite disastrously. Check my BIOS update guide for several ways to update the BIOS.
