    Help!

I purchased a G1S a few days ago and it was working fine until last night when I installed Photoshop CS2 - the DVD drive started making a really noisy "whirring" motor-like sound..?!?!?

After the install, I tried running a few DVD's, installing a game (The Sims 2, heh) and it worked normally (quietly) but now as I'm installing Supreme Commander (DVD) it's making that sound again..!?!?

It's not the "normal" whirring that you hear when you're installing something - we're talking a really loud buzzing sound here.. It's noisy and annoying - but the drive still works though (i.e. It's still installing Supreme Commander - albeit a bit slow for my liking - not sure if that's due to the whirring sound or it's really just a slow drive.. almost 20 mins now and install isn't half done..

Is this normal? I'm pretty sure it is not.

Also, anyone know what it means?

Reason is, although I have until Friday to exchange this with no questions asked - it is going to be a really really really huuuuuge hassle for me. So I don't know if this is just normal with some discs or should I really really need to have it replaced? (i.e. Is it going to blow soon?)

    Many thanks for your input.

And here's another thing - if I sort of "push" the drive in - then it quiets down to 'normal' - but when I take my finger off - it's back to that loud whir..

I think that's normal and shouldn't be of any concern.

I once had that problem when installing from a disc that was warped in a bowl shape.

Same thing here. I think it only happens when reading DVDs not CDs.

I think the drive is spinning much faster when reading DVDs and the drive itself isn't a snug fit inside the case, hence the vibrations. I'm going to take it out and put a thin sheet of rubber under it and put it back in. I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Ok Weird. I was just installing LOTRO and the first disk sounded like a friggin jet. The second disk sounds completely normal. Both are DVD disks so that rules out what I thought.

I think some DVDs (poorer quality, poorer-quality brand, or just a worse batch) are more poorly balanced (in terms of mass distribution) than others.

And the G1S drive is probably very sensitive to this issue. Not being a snug fit might very well be connected to it, you could try the rubber sheet solution it might be effective.
