Has anyone had problems with the DVD drive. I can't install office 2007, and it won't play the DVD "War". Yet I can play other discs?
I tried to update the drivers for the DVD drive but did not find them on the Asus site.

    That's really weird...

On a friend's desktop computer he had a similar issue where some DVDs worked and others didn't. We concluded that Dual Layered DVDs didn't work on his machine even though the DVD drive was Dual Layer capable. He had a defective unit so he returned it to the store.

I'm not saying you have the same problem, but perhaps some of your discs are dirty or scratched?

    Cheers!

If you do find where to get the drivers for the DVD drive, please post it because I'm having other problems with my G1s (DVD playback is extremely slow)...

that sounds like a driver issue or a codec issue as well.

It's weird because the OP said that it can play some DVDs, so if it where a driver issue it shouldn't be able to play any DVDs at all don't you think?

But yes, I think he should try to reinstall the drivers just to make sure.

    Either:
    - scratched or otherwise bad disks (try reputable brands)
    - bad firmware (tough to upgrade but can be done; perhaps best to RMA the drive)
    - bad drivers

Looks like firmware problems. I'd just RMA the drive and get a replacement.

You migth want to try a Windows reinstallation first.

What do you mean about the lens. The lens has to move transversally in order to read the different tracks on the optical disk.

I still don't understand what you mean. The lens is moving uselessly? When the drive is idle? Or what?

Well, yesterday I installed the game Area 51 on my G1S and afterwards, Vista reported an incompatible dirver (StarForce) which was installed by Area 51 which is some sort of Anti-copying protection, several game titles have that anti-copy protection system. When I look it up on Google, I found several references ( like this one, or this one) where people are reporting that StarForce can cause serious damage to the DVD drive, StarForce is even considered Malware. Not sure if that's true or not but I unistalled the game just in case.

    Just so you know... ;)

    Cheers!

I'll give it a try tonight.
    Hope it works :)

The drive seems to spin real noisy, I can tell you that its not normal.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Thank you for sharing with us this informations
I'd definately stay away from StarForce.

About the noise, it might be normal. I know that people have reported G1S ODDs to be very noisy. Some not-so-good design which favors vibrations, I expect.

If the noise is there when the drive is empty, then you should worry indeed.
