After doing some work today, installing software etc., during one of the reboots, just before windows came up, there was a small error box saying it couldn't load a particular file (can't remember) . . . now the DVD drive isn't recognized and won't reinstall. I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling in the device manager, even in safe mode, but it keeps coming up failed.
Running windows Vista. Drive is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L.
I've only had this computer for two days, but I'm afraid the drive is toast. It was making some loud wirring noises yesterday when I was installing some games. I've heard that's normal for this drive, but it was louder than I think it should be.
Any ideas?

Yep G1S drives have been reported to be pretty loud sometimes.
Some people have been having issues with the DVD and solved them by disabling UAC (user access control) in Vista. You could try that. Be aware though of the security implications of disabling UAC. -
Thanks but still no good. The drive just refuses to install.
I took it to a computer shop this morning and we replaced the CD/DVD drive with one from another G1 laptop and the drive still refused to install.
I'm fairly sure it's one of the drive files that's corrupt. I remember doing a reset at one point during my work. Maybe that corrupted one of the files. ?
I also bought a USB DVD drive today, so maybe I can fix the problem with the recovery disc. ?? -
You could also hit F9 on the asus splash screen to recover windows from the recovery partition (assuming you didn't delete it)

Thanks. I didn't know there was a backup partition. That did the trick. Unfortunately I've spent the entire day reinstalling all my stuff. Oh well at least it works now.
There must have been a driver/file that was currupted. I even tried using a USB DVD drive and that wouldn't install either. I remember doing a hard reset and I think that caused the corruption.
Thanks.
G1S DVD drive won't install anymore
