Well seems like I've managed somehow to completely mess up my Geforce 8600M GT drivers installation.

The problem started after I've tried to roll back to WHQL certified ASUS drivers since I wanted to be able to play HD DVD content which non WHQL drivers do not support.
It seems like everytime I try to install the drivers after I've got tired of s*** performance with ASUS official drivers it installs my 8600M GT as a 8400GS.

I've tried installing 169.09 and 169.17 yet it still detects my VGA driver as 8400GS. These two drivers worked perfectly before I rolled back to ASUS official drivers.
After I tried these two drivers with no success I used the Driver Cleaner.net program to uninstall any NVIDIA remains yet after I did so I couldn't even install using the setup.exe in the drivers package files.

What I tried now is install manually the drivers from the system device manager and here comes the weird part...
It showed my VGA driver was succesfully installed as a 8600M GT yet in the device properties it mentions:
Adapter Type: NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT
    Adapter Information:
    Chip type: Geforce 8400 GS
    Adapter String: Geforce 8400 GS

Seems like everything I try to do is hopeless since I'm still stuck with 8400GS in the Nvidia control panel system information.

    any ideas? :(

    System Specs:
    ASUS G1S-A1
    Intel Core Duo 2 @ 2.2Ghz
    2GB DDR2 667Mhz
    Geforce 8600M GT
    Windows Vista 32bit Home Edition

    OK try this.
    1) download DriverCleanerPro
    2) uninstall current driver and reboot
    3) open DriverCleanerPro and select nVidia and click start and reboot again
    4) now go to laptopvideo2go.com and get the driver version u like and download including modded INF
    5) Place modded INF in installtion folder and start installing.

This should bring it back to normal and if u wanna watch HD i think u will need the ffshow decoder?

Even though I did the same already with a diffrent version of the program I repeated it with the exact steps you wrote and I'm still stuck with 8400GS :/

Try using recovery? or move all ur impt files to another partition and try reformating ( of course will work unless ur GPU is really 8400GS.
