well, after debating among several different laptops over the last few weeks, i finally decided on the asus g1s. much of my thanks has to be given to the wonderful community here who introduced to me to the g1s anyway. without you all, i wouldn't have even known asus makes notebooks!
anyway, i have to say i am fully satisfied with my purchase and i feel like a little kid again opening up the super nintendo during some christmas morning years ago. after talking to some good sources, you know who you are, i cleared up some bloatware on the system and installed a few programs i often use i.e. pidgin, xfire, ventrilo, winamp, firefox, etc.
now i'm going to install a few games on this bad boy including WoW, bf2, and steam.
i just want to give my impressions and to anyone that has any questions regarding the system, i am open for them! it really is all it's hyped up to be.

Undoing,
I have asked this question several times but got no answer. How long does it take you to pull up your control panel? It takes my G1s 5 seconds everytime. Just seems to me it should pop up instantly. I was just wondering if everyone elses takes that long. Is this normal?
My HP desktop with a P4 pops the control panel up instantly.
Everything else with the G1s is great! I love it! -

Congrats the G1s is a sweet notebook!

I have just taken delivery of my G1S which i bought from GenTech. The only upgrade I made was getting 3GB of RAM. After an 8 month absence from WoW I can't wait to get back into it. Hopefully if everything goes okay whist I set up the notebook I should behaving a very enjoyable weekend

i really can't tell you what could be a result of this. the only difference i have made in the notebook is upgrading to a 7200rpm hard drive versus the stock 5400 one.
but my guess is it's a vista thing. with aero on, a lot of things that were instant in xp or even vista basic take a few seconds to pop up. personally, i think it's worth it because after messing around with my g1s for a few hours, i don't think i could go back to xp.
vista really does make things a lot more streamlined, interesting, and fresh. -
I have the standard 5400rpm hard drive, but my control panel comes up in about 2-3 seconds(w/ all icons loaded). I have vista installed, but I changed the theme and toolbar to the classic view. Maybe that affected performance.

I personally just changed the pagesize on my g1s to double the amt of my ram. (ie. I had 2gigs, so I set the page to 4gigs). Control panel loads fairly quickly everytime definitely not 4-5s, even after a fresh reboot. I guess vista constantly adjusts page sizes so it affects its performance. but meh, I'm only suggesting an alternative for u guys to try out. (it worked for me)
I didn't change any other settings on vista btw. -

no no no, I don't "double the ram" changing the page size just adjusts the amount of hd space that vista has to store temp files. Just go to control panel/system/performance/advanced,
then under virtual memory click change and deselect automatic manage paging size and manual adjust the min/max settings to stay at approx 4gigs. so what I did for example, I selected no page size on C. and allocated all 4000mbs on my D drive. so what I see in that little box is:
Drive [volume label] Paging Size [MB]
C: [VistaOS] --> none
D: [DATA] --> 4000 - 4000 -
Yo! Congrats man. Enjoy it. Let us know how satisfied you are with BF2142 on it
I bet you wont get time from your Lappy to post here once you start playing......;-)
BTW there is no way in the world to figure out the size of your page file. This completely depends on the cycles your CPU runs on, hard disk read requests and amount of RAM left available by OS.
A friendly suggestion to all of you DO NOT handle page file manually.
Relocating page file to a different partition can be done without drawbacks but manual size handling Nope. -

You can't tell what it is at any particular second in time, but you can easily figure out the upper limits, and when the best HDDs transfer at 3GB/s, I would think that 4 GB pagefile size is fairly close to that limit.

I ordered my g1s yesterday! can someone tell me what bloatware to remove when i get it?
-
Search, search, search...
Live Update is a must remove. Security manager or smth similar (can't remember the exact name) is also known to cause stuttering problems. -
Asus MultiFrame
Asus Secure Data Manager
Asus LiveUpdate
are the biggest ones, MultiFrame has a mouse tracker thing which messes up in game play, you can turn it off, but to me, I've never used MultiFrame and don't need it, so it's gone.
You'll want to update the sound drivers off of realtek's site, the new drivers are like version 1700 or something, when you install them the first time it just removes the old version and reboots, after the reboot you'll have to run the install file again to actually install the new drivers. -
Congrats on the purchase. Im really enjoying mine too. Also, I would remove Splendid. I heard reports of it doing the opposite of what its designed to do and can even make the screen grainy.
