Before I start, thank you for reading this. I'm obviously a new member and hopefully I can contribute :D.

I just bought my G1S July 8th from NCIX.com (It was on sale + there's no PST tax on it so that saved me quite a bit).

My first problem is dead/lit pixels. Currently I have 1 red lit pixel and two black dead pixels. I've called the new ASUS support center in Canada and they are setting up an RMA service call (so I'll be waiting to hear from them). Should I be aware of any requirements for this service? Also do they replace the laptop or just the panel?

The second problem (rather problems) is very confusing and I'm still figuring out whether it's purely software or hardware (or a mixture of both). I've had issues installing games and getting them to run properly. For example, Halo 2 has odd graphical glitches and the framerate seems to skip quite a bit. And Lost Planet DX10 demo will not run at all. What are the best drivers for the gpu on this laptop?

I'd also like to know how to use the recovery DVD/hidden partition correctly. Does it delete the old partition and create a brand new one? If not is there any program I can use compatible with the G1S? Which is better? The recovery DVD or the hidden partition?

Finally, I've heard upgrading from 2GB to 3GB helps bigtime with games on Vista. Which models of memory are compatible with the G1S?

    More likely the panel only.

Earlier DX10 Drivers had a lot of problems, the newer drivers have solved many problems. And sadly, the driver support from ASUS is not very good. So many people get the drivers from nVidia or laptopVideo2Go.com

The recovery partition is at the beggining of the drive. It is the same as the day-one Windows on your machine. The recovery software on the hidden partition wipes out the partition that will be chosen as the destination (not many options, wipe the whole drive and recover into a single-large partition or to recover it only to the first or the second partition while leaving the rest of partitions intact)
Both the HDD and the DVD serve the same function, but if the driver's CD is separate from the Windows DVD, you can do fresh Windows installation with it too.

The DDR2 667/533 memory modules are compatible. But it's much suggested to use DDR2-667 memory both for the speed and the extremely little price difference.

Thank you very much. I've been to that laptopvideo2go website before, but wasn't sure how well it would work. Good to know people do use it with the G1S.

So any DDR2-667 module should work well eh? I didn't know if I had to look for a specific brand beyond that. Good to know I don't have to be picky as heck lol.

I heard the latest drivers have some compatibility issues, so try 165.01, I got a 3dmark06 score of 3823 with it.

Awesome. I'll definitely try those. The stock drivers are garbage.

I have one more question. I seem to be having problems with the Recovery DVD included with my G1S. A few times it has failed to install properly and I'm not sure why. This is important because I'm waiting for my order on the 120GB Momentus 7200.2 Seagate HDD, and I'll have to use that DVD in order to get Vista on it.

I'm thinking of running some tests on the laptop hardware. I'll be using memtest86+ for the RAM, however I'm not sure what to use for the hard drive and DVD-ROM.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for all the help up to now.

What happens when you try to install from the dvd? Where does the installation process stop?

I also ran into some problems when restoring my G1s using the supplied recovery DVD. After getting help from Asus tech support, here is the process that works:

    • Press Esc when laptop boots to get to the BIOS and set DVD drive as the default boot drive
    • Boot the laptop with Recovery DVD loaded
    • System will ask for the driver DVD
    • After Windows boots, it will start initializing. At some point it will ask to be restarted. Go ahead and restart.
    • Once system restarts, a window will appear stating that the install cannot continue and has to be restarted.
    • Reboot the machine - press F9 repeatedly when Asus logo shows
    • Select the Windows EMS boot option
    • The system will recover from HDD

Wow, I restored day before yesterday and all I had to do was insert the DVD, it booted, told me to insert drivers cd, did that, and then it took a really long time but eventually was finished.

That's the way it's supposed to work. The first time it booted into Vista before the install was even finished. The second time, it froze at the command line when it was installing all the software/drivers (on the ESATA\CHKDEV.EXE SILENT.INI).

I don't know what to think.. Whether it's just screwed up software on ASUS's end, or something is wrong on a hardware level.

Mine never asks me to restart. It just restarts by itself. As for the rest of the steps.. They don't make much sense. Why would ASUS ship recovery software if it has to "fail" to work?

it works. i failed the first time though. just keep the drivers cd in there and dont take it out till the installation is complete and your on the desktop. if you take it out when it reboots it wont install and you will have to start over. i just did it but it takes forever. anybody have any problems with call of duty 2. i installed it but when i join any multiplayer server all i can see is my crosshair, ammount of ammo and radar but i cant see anything else. its like a blank screen of whatever color the map is. its pissing me off

As far as memory brands, I've heard that OCZ And Kingston were no go. Patriot is good. Corsair, Crucial, G. Skill should work.
