Hi guys,
I recently upgraded graphics drivers from 174.93 to 178.13 because I wanted better performance.
178.13 works like a charm (real improvement in many games) but it has a huge drawback : sleep mode trick doesn't work anymore.
Consequently when I play COD4 for instance, the game starts stuttering when temp reaches 96°c.
I am really pissed about that. Is there anything I can do (like changing values in the inf file of the drivers) ? If no, what are the most recent drivers known including the sleep mode trick ?
It is a shame that we, G1S owners, can't benefit from performances increase on "old games" and play "new games" in good conditions (eg: Far Cry 2 which requires very recent drivers).

It seems we have the same problem here. (For my case) I dare to confirm that the sleep trick will no longer work on any driver above 175.xx
I am using the latest stock driver, directly downloaded from Asus official website at the moment (do not use Asus driver from laptopvideo2go because they have failed me so far as the sleep mode no longer works with them). The version that I am using at the moment is 175.64
I am doing ok with this driver. Dead Space and Far Cry 2 run smooth like butter (Far Cry 2 gives message that my driver is outdated but still I can run the game at full speed no problem at all). -
Oh that's bad then.
Though it's strange only few seem to wonder about this issue.
I mean performance is REALLY bad in Call Of Duty World At War (often stuck between 8 and 19 fps) with 175.xx drivers. It was better with 178.xx (between 17 and 30 fps) but I can't play more than 10 minutes because temp reaches 96°c and performance drops.
I really would like to get over the 96°c limit. We all know that G1S presents overheating issues and moreover Nvidia GPU seems to be faulty. So if one plays games with the G1S, the GPU will eventually die let's face it. But this is not a problem for me as long as the warranty hasn't ran out. -
Have you tried Asus official driver (175.64)? It works very well for me. I have played Assassin's Creed, Dead Space, and Far Cry 2 with no problem at all. The last thing that I tried very recently were Devil May Cry 4 demo and Left 4 Dead demo. Those two also no problem at all. I have not tested it with Call of Duty 5 and Fallout 3 though....
I am in Singapore and for some reason "all" versions of Fallout 3 came out already except the one for PC. When I visited a local game store, I saw a limited edition of Fallout 3 (imported from USA for SGD 120.00) and they stickied a label on it "There may or may not be a local version of Fallout 3, please take this consideration before purchase". I wonder what that means...... -
a) Somehow have their GPU's kept under 96C (Cooling Pad, Case Mods, etc)
b) Don't have a G1S with a 8600M GT
c) Are using really old drivers which limit performance and hence you don't see the fps fluctuations
d) Are playing games at settings that keep the fps so low you don't see fps fluctuations
e) Are trolling/Don't own a G1S
Since the G1S isn't being produced/updated anymore I guess us G1S owners are SOL. I also agree with the above poster who said the 175.64 isn't bad though. -
The last driver I know that sleepfix works is 177.41 , it works fine in my g1s .

Wow.... really? then this might actually give some hope to G1s owner with sleep trick problem, that there are indeed some drivers which are still compatible with the sleep mode trick. I am gonna give your driver a try when I have the time. Thanks -
Ok, I just tried 177.41
It......works!!!!!and so does the Nvidia's PhysX. I tried to play some games with this driver for about 2 hours after putting system into sleep mode and everything was ok. The driver was very stable and gave noticeable improvement in loading times. Assassin's Creed loading time was nearly cut in half.

I can record good real-world game fps stats for my G2S, very similar to the G1S. I use a low-end Antec cooler and reduce temps from 95C to 85C, well within the range. I have not tested out the sleep mode trick, well, I don't even understand it completely even, but a cheapy cooler seems to work for me. I am using the 177.66 modded inf drivers on Vista x86 with no issues. All of my normal functions work and it plays Insurgency, Left 4 Dead Demo, etc. on medium-high settings with 50-70 fps.
I would be nice if Asus would acknowledge the Nvidia issue. I am going to go out on a limb and say that I would even pay them to have my G2S fixed/upgraded. Unfortunately, as many have said above, it is impossible to play a modern game without any kind of trick, whatever it may be. For $100-200, I would definitely be willing to ship my laptop to get fixed. It is not a money thing at this point, its just a "I want to play games with nothing extra or hanging on." Well, my 2 cents anyways. Good luck -
