Normally when plugging in or unplugging external speakers the RealTek Audio driver should give a notification that something has been plugged in or unplugged. However, it does not do that now, and when I unplug the external speakers, the built in speakers don't come on either. Anyone have any idea what is wrong?

Nope, but I'd try reinstalling the sound drivers.
