I was wondering what is normal for idling temps with the G1S with and without a notebook cooler.
Thanks =]

visit the NBR Cooling Central.
You will find the safe and danger temps there. Its generally the same for most systems. -
With some people hitting 100C+ on their G1s I was starting to wonder if this was 'permissible' for the G1s. -
only the GPU gets to 100-110, the CPU is at 80 on full load
-
I was asking because i wanted to know if my G1S is similar to everyone elses.
-
it probably is, and it probably has to be sent back
its only a matter of time -
GPUs should not get beyond 90C for safe usage... at full load.
Make sure you are not blocking the vents, ONLY use the notebook on clean, flat, hard surfaces. Make sure there is no dust in the vents... because that would easily cause overheating.
I highly recommend to get extra cooling (like a good notebook cooler... Zalman ZM-NC2000) for the notebook so that the system would not get permanent damage with artifacts or even a dead videocard.
If you do not want to waste your investment, you should try to take care of the notebook as much as you can. -
i spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to find out what was going on with my G1s and the conclusion was that everyone's is like that and all G1s's have overheating problems that will surface sooner or later.
this is my 2nd one, and has the same problem. when i send it back i'll tell them to send me something without a 8600mgt. a calculator will do -
thats ridiculous if the thermal design cannot even handle a mid-range card.
Are you using a notebook cooler at least? -
of course not. if i wanted to carry around a cooler i'd get a desktop and carry that one around instead.
besides, if you see how fast the temperature creeps up you'd understand that a cooler would make no difference whatsoever.
and all while playing world of warcraft. far from demanding
its an air conditioned room tho
it most likely has something to do with the recent nvidia fiasco too -

My G1S use to routinely reach 100-110°C while gaming until I applied Arctic Silver 5 throughout it. The old thermal compound was dried up and crumbled. Now I game (Crysis, COD4, Turok, Assassin's Creed, FFOW) in the mid 80's max. Even ~5 minutes of the ATITool 3D view only reaches 95°C. This is all while bios overclocked to 550/1100/750.
