I have had my Asus G1S since January of 2008. I have been somewhat pleased with it, but recently I have found out that I may have been given a faulty graphics card. After talking to someone that plays the same game as me and has the same computer (exact same computer) I found out I was running at 10 FPS in game with minimum settings while he was running the game at 50 FPS with max settings.

Obviously this concerned me and after doing research on my GPU, the GeForce 8600m GT, i found out that some of them are in fact defective (which may explain my bad performance).

After running some diagnostics, I found out that the card was running at about 75 degrees celcius. Then, just last night I tried using my machine and I was getting VERY bad distortion on the screen. It is most similar to this screenshot (not mine): http://www.playtool.com/pages/artifacts/screen0032fh.jpg

So basically, I believe the problem is with the video card. If you guys think otherwise let me know. If it is the video card though, do you guys have any suggestions on what I can do to go about replacing the card? Being a laptop, the Asus G1s may not be compatible with all video cards. Are there any users out there that have replaced their GPU in their Asus? Sorry for such an open ended question.

The 8600 GT is known to cause problems in the G1s. Mine actually recently melted down and now I need to replace the bloody thing. If you're still under warranty then send it to them immediately as it will eventually burn up.

I'm now in the ty situation of my warranty being deadand having to replace the 8600 gt...

Where did you get the G1S from rreynol? I think if you got the Best Buy version it only has a 1 year warranty, otherwise it has the 2 year warranty which you are covered under. I have a G2S which is pretty much a 17 inch version of the G1S and just got mine back from having the motherboard replaced.

If you didn't know already the GPU is soldered to the motherboard so the whole thing must be replaced. If you are under the 2 year warranty many people here have said that Asus is replacing their laptops with newer models because of motherboard shortages for the G1S.

I have the 1 year warranty from bestbuy. Do you think because the 8600M GT's were faulty that ASUS will still do the repair work? If not, how much am I looking at paying for the G1S-n motherboard? Do they even have them?

I would call Customer Service and explain your situation. I really don't know how they would handle something like this. If they don't fix it for free and you send it for a paid repair, they are still short on motherboards. Maybe they will just replace your system anyway for the lack of parts. /shrug

If they DO have a motherboard to replace yours, I would say you are looking at around 400 dollars for the repair. The G2S mainboard is listed on their e-store for something like 380 dollars.

It won't hurt to try contact Asus and see if they are able to do anything for you, but in the worst case scenario where you'd have to pay for the parts, the mother board itself would cost around $200-$300 plus labor.

Thats not as bad as I was expecting. It's still a lot cheaper than getting a new computer and my G1S is still pretty powerful. $200-300 seems pretty standard for the G1S-n motherboard?
