I thought that the G1S has a built in Network card so you wouldnt even need a PCMCIA card??

I use my expresscard slot for a Verizon WWAN card. There's still need for it.

PCMCIA can accommodate a much more varied range of extensions than just a wireless card.

Huh? I don´t get it... but then again I don´t know much about WLAN.

The G1S has an in-built 801.11n card right?
-which can cope with more than double the speed of 801.11g right?

What need is there for the card slot if not using a 3g-modem or something?

I'm not sure where exactly I wasn't clear enough.

Here's just an example with a few tens of possible extensions to plug into PCMCIA:

Another example is the Audigy ZS sound card from Creative.

    Or a serial port.

Or many, many other possibly useful things. WLAN is not the only possible use of the PCMCIA.
