The G1S was great up until yesterday when I'm pretty sure that the GPU died.. out of nowhere. I had just been using it to surf the web when I put it to sleep. When I tried to wake it up a couple hours later, there was no display. I restarted it and the initial Asus screen didn't even show up. I also tried hooking it up to an external monitor with no success. I removed the battery and held the reset button underneath the keyboard for 30+ seconds and that did no good as well. There had been no signs of failure- no noise, artifacting.. nothing.

The computer definitely boots and loads windows, just no display. I was really happy with this computer until now! It seems as though many people are having problems with it after using it for over a year so, unfortunately, be warned fellow Asus G1S owners!

Edit: Also, I am a nut about taking care of all of my electronic devices. Same goes for the G1S, I kept it clean, inside and out. It had never been dropped or misused. I ventured into overclocking well over 6 months ago but never used it other than to see what kind of improvement I could get out of it and the performance boost just wasn't there so I dropped it. Heck, since I got another 360 a few months ago I haven't even played games on it, so that made it even more unexpected!

Sorry to hear...unfortunately, the G1S systems are basically time bombs with their defective GPUs.

Will Asus replace these under warranty even though it's working at the moment? Or will they replace them out of warranty since it's a known defect?

Asus is decent within the US for replacing out of warranty. They will usually work with you in terms of getting a replacement RMA going. For the G1S it is a known issue, so there should be no id issues.

    spot on

it has a 2yr warranty so better send it in. do NOT accept it back if they replace it with a 8600m

send it in and tell them its overheating, shutting down, doing all sorts of wierd stuff.

do it before the warranty runs out or else you're risking it

My G1S just died last week after having the same symptoms you described. Fortunately I'm still within warranty after 1.5 years of ownership. I was also told the GPU would be replaced with a 9500m GS along with the motherboard. Currently its at their service center undergoing repairs, so I might have it back at the end of the week.

On a side note, ASUS after sale service is excellent.

its not just G1s's, my G1 with its Go7700m died same way, Asus very kindly did an out of warrenty RMA (only a few weeks out of warrenty) after i suggested that this was a known problem. 8 days from the courier picking it up from my house, its back and good as new.
the way i figure, its probably got another 2 years of daily use if this is indicative of the fail rate. by then i should be ready to buy something new...

I had a similar system (G2S-X1) with similar issues. Unfortunately, purchased through Best Buy, so only had a 1 year warranty - and had the exact same problem at the 16 month point. Asus actually told me at first it was unrepairable, that they'd discontinued the line becasue of mobo/graphics card issues, and I was out of luck. Later, after another angry phone call from me, they said I could send it in and pay for a repair, that they'd order and install another mobo/graphics card. They were to call the next day with a cost estimate, and to tell me exactly what they'd be replacing it with as far as card type, etc.

That was last week. I used the extra time when they didn't call to research the issues with the mobo/graphics card and to reflect on how much trouble I'd had with the laptop over the past 16 months (instability, lockups, heat problems, crashes, etc).

I'm now waiting on delivery of my replacement laptop, ordered yesterday (not from Asus), after deciding not to go through with repairing the Asus. They never got back to me on the issue... so I guess my advice is be wary. I can't say that my experience with customer service over the life of the Asus laptop was good, but there are others with good reports... Personally, I'm steering clear of them in the future, but I recognize I could also have experienced an isolated incident, not representative of typical service from Asus.

I have heard a few times that although the machines are out of warranty, if they are suffering from the well-known issues (like GPU) ASUs was replacing them for free. And that is what should be done I think...

lol... yeah, i thought so, too, but unfortunately their customer service didn't see it that way. :( That was what really annoyed me - I can understand issues may develop, and I understand shutting down the line on the models due to known problems - but they told me they had effectively cut off support for anyone who still had the system, and that I do not understand.

Or, for that matter, if a problem like this became known, why not try to get the word out to owners? First I heard of the issue was when I started to research why mine blew up...

Ah, well, live and learn, I guess. :)

i tried talking to a csr and they said if nvidia didnt release any news about the gpu defect they cud do nothing for free. but they are willing to do an out of service waranty for a minimal fee for part replacement. unless someone can help me out to get my gpu replaced as its showing signs of the overheating thing(talking my way in). il end up paying for a replacement. etc etc..
