Hey guys,
I tried updating Vista using windows updates. During the install I got a BSOD and it rebooted my system. I was then prompted to choose to repair, or start windows normally. I chose repair and I was immediately brought back to the same prompt. So I chose restart vista normally, same thing.
I rebooted, pressed f9 to bring up the recovery, went to recover, and as it started, I got an error that says "cannot set temp path to work in" and then ERROR in big red letters. This happens with the recovery CD/Partion no matter which option I chose. Ive called ASUS and the recommended making a boot disc and putting Aflash2 and the G1SAS.203 bios on it. Did that, reflashed the bios, still getting the error msg.
Theyve scheduled me for an RMA but I really dont want to have to do that. Anyone have any advice?

can you boot from the recovery cd?
-
Safe mode didnt work? If it does go in there and use the system restore and go back to a day before your problem. Did you Asus come with a restore DVD? If so use the windows xp/vista cd to delete all your partitions and use the recovery DVD. Make sure no other devices are plugged in. Have you upgraded your RAM? If so try removing it.

i havent tried booting into safe mode but ill try that right now. Also, I have tried booting from the recovery DVD and the recovery partition, both work until it starts to recover and then thats when I get the error. Ill try booting into safe mode and recovering from to the previous day. I have not upgraded my RAM.

starting in safe mode does not work. It only prompts me to recover, and recovering from there still gives me the same error...

Try deleting all the partitions (including the recovery one) and then boot with the DVD again and follow all the default options. If this doesn't work you need to get it replaced. Some hardware device is probably failing.

how do i go about removing all of the partitions? Keep in mind I cant get into windows at all. Even in safe mode all it does is throw me to the recovery screen. And if I remove all of the partitions is the recovery cd still going to work? Doesnt it need an active install of windows in order to work?

Do you have a windows xp or vista cd available? If so boot with that and follow the options till you see something that lets you select where to install windows and there should be a way to hit "D" key for delete partition. Once they are deleted try again. You could always install windows from scratch but chances are its going to blue screen on you again.

heres the thing, if i go to delete all the partitions, am i still going to be able to use the recovery cd?
-
ok, putting in a XP install CD from my old dell laptop and booting from that told me that there are no harddrives installed on mine computer...
-
That could be a problem...Reboot and hit f2 or delete or whatevet it is at the boot screen to get into your bios. See if the hard Drive pops up in there. If not and you still can't get to the hardDrive you are going to have to return it.

the bios still recognizes the HDD: SATA
M-Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00

Hrm I have a Hitachi also. You can get drive tools from hitachi's website and run that. Its a cd you burn and its bootable. Tests your hardDrive to makesure its ok.
-
testing right now thanks.

check in your bios if there is an "Sata compatibility mode" if so you can turn this on and windows XP should see it. If this still doesn't work ship it off.

I think the hard drive not found when you boot from windows xp happens on all the G1S. Its because Windows XP doesn't have the sata controller drivers on the cd or something. I think when people install xp they have to slipstream the drivers.
The exact method can be found http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=146088 on step 5
G1S desperately need help!
