Ok, instead of looking through the 50+ pages of posts on the G1s I was hoping that you guys could help me out here instead, as I need to get this thing up and running tonight or tomorrow.

What is the first thing that I should do? Trying to decide on putting clean install of XP or Vista on the machine..which OS should I use?

What drivers are a must to download?

Do I need to go ahead and update the BIOS?

If I can think of any other questions I will post them, but I really want your ideas. Thanks

I've used both OS on my G1s. Personally, XP dishes out a little boost in gaming, however its requires a couple more steps to install. Also, you will not find any drivers from Asus for G1s. There is a driver pack for XP floating around the forums which can be easily found using the search feature. Currently, I'm using Vista and so far its been great. Drivers are a lot easier for find for Vista.

What drivers are a must to download?
In Vista, I installed all the drivers that came with the CD except video card drivers. I downloaded those off laptopvideo2go.com.
For XP, I used the drivers in the driver pack and they worked great except the video card drivers (which I also got from laptopvideo2go.com). One note regarding XP, when installing Ethernet drivers...you will need to use the "Have Disk" method to manually locate drivers and install them. The SD card drivers can be installed using the "Automatically search for drivers" method on your Vista drivers CD that came with G1s.

Do I need to go ahead and update the BIOS?
I didn't. I don't think you need to yet (until they come out with the new bios that will fix the underclocking issue when battery is charging).

If I can think of any other questions I will post them, but I really want your ideas. Thanks

    1) Clean install of Vista will be easier as you'll already have the drivers on hand. Don't insert the drivers CD during vista installation to geta clean install.

    2) I installed audio drivers from realtek, ATK generic, atk hotkey, atk media, ricoh flash media driver, direct console - mostly from the asus website to get the latest ones. I'll probably get updated video drivers when I need to play bioshock.

    3) i didn't update the bios. What I have is working - I'll wait til they fix the power thing.

My G1S runs great. Good luck.

Well I can't find my XP disc for some reason, so I decided (reluctantly) to give Vista another shot....we'll see how it works in the next couple of weeks.

Deathx32, it's not bad that you're using yours stock by any means, but I didn't want the 80+ applications running in the background that ASUS sticks on there.

    I'm using this one: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14562
with my g1s stock(so vista 32 bit). It's still beta, but a nice driver :) realy optimize the gaming experience. Anyway, dont forget to download and put in the good directory the modded INF if it dont work the first time. It will work flawlessly :-D
    Good luck

I just uninstalled all the programs I didn't want, and I'm perfectly happy with the way my computer runs.

Had I known how easy it was to install a fresh compy of vista though, I probably would have just done that. Oh well.
