    Hello everyone...

The good 'ol simonfzhao referred me to Newegg's Asus G1S which seems to be a great deal, but there seems to be a huge price difference over other resellers... So... what's the catch?

    Any ideas?

I've never purchased from Newegg before, but they seem to have pretty good ratings...

Do they already know something we don't know yet? (AKA G1Sn????) :D

Are they getting ready for new stock??? :D

    Happy weekend!

Newegg is by far the biggest (and best) online reseller for all electronic commodities. The only catch with buying a notebook from them is that you cannot return it, period. Thats not too big of a problem, if you know you will like it and be keeping the notebook.

I ordered my W7S from Newegg ;) Best price, and GenTech ran out of stock on the A1 series, and I didn't want to pay the extra $100 for a B2.

The catch? You get an awesome computer for an even more awesome price. True, returns are not possible, but if you've done your research, it's not big deal.

My brother just ordered this exact system from Newegg and it arrived 3 days layer... Newegg is great.

A lot of online resellers/retailers will not allow refunds for laptop purchases. When I purchased mine from GenTech, that was their policy.

As far as newegg goes, they are my favorite source for computer hardware. Unless you plan to return the notebook incase you don't like it, you may want to look around for another reseller.

My newegg purchase total speaks for itself: amazing, haha.

They take so much of my money, but it's all the best prices. Definitely the place for computer parts.

You have to link it, there are different versions out there, it may have a slower cpu, it probably doesn't come with the bag & mouse ect.

There ARE sometimes catches but you need to give a link if you want me to look into it for you more.

No catch, it's a good price, however the G1S-A1 is phasing out soon. If the budge is allowed, you should take a look and consider the G1S-B2. (Asus is offering a $100 rebate + free gaming headset on both G1S-B2 and G2S-B2)

Sorry bout that... Yep, that's the one I'm talking about :D

    @ExcaliberPC

    Phasing out soon?

Do you know something we don't know?

Perhaps the G1Sn will take it's place? ;) :D

Thanks for your recommendation about the B1, but I think that .2 Mhz is not that big of a deal, and the A1 can be upgraded to whatever HDD I want, the same goes for the RAM. Or am I missing something else?

    Thanks everyone for your comments!

    Keep 'em coming!

    Cheers!

Not the technology that is phasing out, but the model G1S-A1 is. Can't comment on what's coming up just yet. The B2 model has Intel T7700(2.4GHz) + 3GB of RAM (factory installed) + Hitachi 7K200 200GB (factory installed) and if you try to upgrade to something similar from the A1 model, the price should add up to about the same, if not, definitely a little bit more. Thanks!

RAM is certainly worth it, HDD might be worth it (although in the laptop world perhaps 5400 is a better idea for heat and power reasons).

But the CPU, I wouldn't worry about it, the extra .2GHz will have nearly zero real-life impact.

heat is not an issue with 15 17 inch frame when running 7200rpm. i'm running on my asus z84j without any problem.

With small computers u might feel it through the thin plastic body :D.

G2s is huge G1 is decent but still big , however both are great machines... i might wait for the new refresh of 45nm and order one.

g1s-a1 is already phased out. it is officially end of life. not all resellers have a no refund policy. Some of us have a very opebn refund policy. Some allow you to return it with no restocking.

Some of you have mentioned that the G1S-A1 has been already or will be phased-out soon.

In that case the B1 and B2 have to be phased-out too right?

I mean, they are basically the same notebook (just a few upgraded features here and there) but it's the same chasis, motherboard, GPU, etc...

However, I recognize the fact that a new platform is soon to arrive (penryn) and I'm really considering waiting for it. (I remember being in the same predicament when I purchased my G1P and Santa Rosa was a few months in the future).

Thanks all for your thoughts and comments!

Also is anyone aware if this newegg deal features a glossy or a Matte screen?

To ignore this deal because the model is being "phased out" would be one the dumbest mistakes ever. You still get a laptop with great specs, from a reliable company and with a ton of extras... for a very low price. None of that changes when a new model comes out and any new models will be much more expensive while having only incrementally better specs. There is nothing that you will be able to do with the new models that you can't do with this model...

    Just saying...

If I end up ignoring this deal is not because it's already "phased-out" but because January 6th is so close and that's when Penryn Mobile will be officially launched.

However, I'm not really concerned about Penryn anymore, I've been reading about it and initially it will not offer much improvement over Merom since they both share the same 35W TDP and Intel will not offer (initially) a quad core Core2 Extreme Mobile but a Dual Core Extreme only. (I just found that on Google).

What I'm really interested on is on a G1 with better GPU than what the current Asus G1S-A1 has. I don't know, something like the 8800GT.

I really hope the mysterious Asus G1Sn offers something better than the 8600GT.

P.S.- Excuse my english, I'm from Mexico. :D

    Cheers!

I think I got plain lucky. Bought a brand new G1S-X3 (same specs as A1) from Best Buy for $1019 + Tax. The floor model, which was X1 was being sold for $949 + Tax.

    Thanks RayanMX.

Now on to those tweaks. Let me know if any one has found a good hi-speed docking station to work with this laptop.
