Yes, same CPU on new mobo.
The new fan has this type of fan configuration instead of the normal fan in the G1S:

in the meantime, it's been 6 business days and my RMA still has the same status.
no laptop and no gaming makes anelectricmind a very impatient man...
maybe they just decided to use the Asus UK Notebook Service... -
...or maybe it might have something to do with all that snow mother nature decided to dump on us today.
Or could be very well that the Canadian center didn't have any G1Sn boards yet. As long as aren't still on the slow boat from Taiwan... -
now THAT'S customer service...! -
...well... end of BUSINESS DAY 7 and still the same status (REPAIR)... and no news of what's happening to my laptop.
... and Teri (sp) won't even return my calls...
sorry guys... i am running out of material to entertain you... -
thanks for keeping this thread uptodate
may the asusgods return your baby soon -
-
TERI CALLED BACK!! TERI CALLED BACK!
.. and it seems like they will be changing my motherboard. But they are waiting for the motherboard to arrive in-house. Turnaround time : Middle to end of next week.
She does not know if they will be putting a new CPU (Penryn) or keeping the old one.
At least, I know what they are doing with my laptop... -
oh i feel sorry for u ... I was kind of hoping they were out of motherboards and had to give u a g50
-
well... i can always try and intercept the shipment of mobo and steal them all until they give me a G50... -
CONGRATULATIONS! That is great news. This gives me hope for my eventual RMA.
-
... but she said they were waiting for A new mobo... not a G1Sn mobo...
unless there is some valuable source here on this forum that can confirm that there's no more G1S mobo laying around, it can be either a G1S or a G1Sn... heck... that can even fit an E(howmanye)PC mobo in it if they feel like it... -
Haha. I am excited that they are actually going to fix it. Truthfully the 8600M is not that bad, and other than the heat issues, I rather like it. It is no 8800, but it gets the job done for me. I am just elated to be freed from my cooling pad on stock clocks. They could put a PC board in for me too, haha. The size is not the issues, its the function.
-
... not really an update, but just in case some of you felt abandonned in the process...
... well... Asus FINALLY updated their RMA Web site, and the UI is on par with the one from Norway and/or the rest of Europe.
Right now, my computer has the "Repairing" status. Doesn't mean really much. Did they receive the mobo? Is it lying somewhere on an operation table, case wide open? Dunno.
For your entertainment here is the Asus Repair Status Route given on their website :
Product Received > done
(Waiting) > done and for a long time
Repairing > this is where we are
Final Testing > soon hopefully
Packing > hope they don't take more than a business day for this one
Ready for Shipping >
Repair Finished >Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Wow, thats about 7 more steps than I know from my last RMA experience...customer service anyone? 8D

Hey, anelectricmind, my G2S just crashed the same way yours did. Today I forced its GPU a bit - I had 2 monitors, and running EDIUS (a video editing software), drawing three screens at the same time in the secondary display.
I could see the time when the GPU visibly crunched. The three videos (three different angles) were running smoothly, then the computer started to "sing" (if you know what I mean) REAL LOUD. Everything just gone mad slow. But nothing really happened at the time. It worked normally until I turned the laptop off like, two hours later.
When I get home, I try to turn it on, only to get a dead screen. I turned the Asus boom noise off, but I could see the HD light working, and everything else. Tried to plug another monitor, and nothing happened. I'd guess dead GPU, forced above its limitations.
It's sad to discover that ASUS has such crappy GPUs. I mean, my partner at work has a Sony VAIO, and he edits video all the time, always dual screen, multi-camera mode, smoothly and quietly.
I could feel the GPU had a problem for nearly three months now. I was getting real low FPS rate whenever I played World of Warcraft, Assassings Creed (Directx 9) and even Civilization IV! That's not how it's meant to be played, I suppose.
The worst part of it? My 12-month warranty just voided in August. I bought it second-hand, borrowing money from the bank. Four payments to go. And I'm trying to convince myself that the guy who sold it to me knew nothing.
Sorry to bulk-text your thread, I'm really shocked to find someone who had the same problem so quickly. Your post was the fourth from the top one when I googled ""asus" turns on but nothing happens".
*sigh*, good luck for me. Hope yours get home soon, and safe.
I should have bought an elite Xbox 360 for that price. (With all my luck, it'd be 3RL'd by now) -
Hey XKuei, did the original user have it registered? Also, the G2S came with a 2 year limited and 1 year accidental if purchased from select retailers, so it may still be covered. If the original owner registered it and it is in/out of warranty, have him contact Asus for a replacement. You will have to rely on his goodwill and assistance, but you are still entitled to a replacement of a defective product that was released late in the game. Asus did not offer extended warranties to anyone to cover this issue once is was known and has still not admitted to it as other companies have. Even if you are out of warranty, get the contact rolling, they may replace it for free, especially if you are in the US. The US support seems to be the best out of it and the UK. Worst comes to worst you either pay Asus for the mobo change or scrap it and make a couple hundred.
'Remember, the worst they can do is say no' -Someone wise once said
Good luck! -
gengerald, thanks for the advice.
I'm gonna contact the original owner right now.
Thanks.
Still following anelectricmind case. Please keep posting, I'd like to know what did they put on your new one. -
Now worries about the bulk-text. Like I said, there is a high failure rate for the nVidia 8x00 serie. Rumour has it that even the 9x00 serie might be as defective.
-
As of this morning (Dec 17, 4 inches of snowing coming my way), it's still marked as "Repairing".
Keep tuning in, this forum has a lot of helpful resources. (Been lurking for a while before I started posting) -
Dear Santa,
I know I may not have been the nicest boy on the block this year.
I may have kicked my annoying cats a few too many times and tailgated alot of very slow cars on the left lane (after all, it is the passing lane ).
I may have lost patience with the kids a few times (a choir of twins crying can sometimes be hard on your very tired mind).
And I may have cursed on a few forums.
But I wish you can forgive me those little misbehavior and grant me my one and only wish for this year...
... CAN YOU ASK ASUS TO MOVE THEIR P@*&^$%G A!$, REPAIR THE D*&@#D LAPTOP AND SHIPPING IT BACK BEFORE X-MAS!!!
Thanks Santa,
Your Truly,
anelectricmind.
(still in repair) -
Thank you Santa.
UPDATE : Repair Status is set to...
PACKING!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
... and "Repair finished()" according to the Asus Repair Status Inquiry website.
hopefully, it should be delivered before tomorrow 12pm.
(and the crowd cheers and goes wild hoping that anelectricmind will FINALLY stop updating his thread with inane posts/comments) -
i like it man, its very entertaining
-
Same, this thread will prove to be one of the most useful threads for the next 2 years when the G1S/G2S users find themselves at the mercy of Asus or they are figuring out what has gone wrong and how Asus really did/didn't help with it. Even if I had pay for the mobo exchange (which I would never do as I seem to have a firm way the way I converse during the RMA process), I would do so as $500 for a bit longer would workout for me. My next upgrade will be to a SLI rig and that should top $6k after I am finished upgrading it. Who knows
The options are endless!
-
... and so the laptop just arrived...
more on it later... (still too cold to power it up - -16 celsius here this morning - 3 degrees Fahrenheit for you imperial folks.)
But they did indeed change it to a G1Sn mobo according to the RMA paper. With a new CPU cover BUT a missing Express Card dummy card.
... and the laptop came back squicky clean, NOT A SINGLE FINGERPRINT on the laptop or on the screen. -
UPDATE : The Verdict
So here's a recap on the entire RMA process for those interested.
End of November : Got a black screen with a post sound and nothing happening besides a few clicks from the HDD. Monitor connected through the HDMI port was also black although a signal was detected.
Dec 1 : Called for an RMA, Fedex will pick it up the day after.
Dec 2 : Fedex pickup
Dec 3 : Delivered to Asus
... fast forward...
Dec 12 : Called Asus as laptop seemed to be forever on the repair queue. Got a confirmation that it was the motherboard and that they are waiting for the part. ETA : Dec 17-18.
Dec 18 : My birthday... oh... and also... laptop repairs finished.
Dec 19 : Received the laptop from Fedex.
The Repairs : (according to the RMA Paper)
- Motherboard upgraded from G1S to G1Sn
- CPU Cover changed.
Observations :
- The laptop was squicky clean - no fingerprints on the screen or on the glossy surfaces
- Still the same CPU (T7500)
- Reformatted the HDD to Vista 32bits Home Premium (Had Vista x64 Ultimate). RMA Paper mentionned to call customer for HDD reload, but they never did. BUT was mentionned that I had a full backup of the HDD so it didn't bother me to have the HDD wiped out. Although I was surprised they did.
- Came with a (burned) copy of the G1Sn DVD Drivers. Very complete DVD.
- They misplaced/forgot the ExpressCard dummy card. Will call them about that.
Note on the CPU Cover :
I have read on the forum that when they upgrade a G1S to a G1Sn, they change the CPU Cover because the old one would not fit on the new configuration. It seems true for me since it look like they switched the stickers (Bluetooth and wireless I think) on the new CPU Cover. ALSO, and this is quite interesting: the black tape that was masking the vents DOES NOT SEEM TO BE THERE!!! I remember reading here about the usefulness of these tapes on the G1S. Well, my CPU Cover DOES NOT have black tape. I can see the copper heatpipe/fan through the vent holes. I cannot confirm this as I didn't have a screw driver to remove the cover.
Also, apparently the fan is not the same as the G1S mobo, but I still cannot confirm this.
Packaging :
Packaging was ok. I had sent my laptop in its original Asus box and it was returned the same way. Except that I had remove the battery from my laptop when I shipped it to Asus, it was return to me with the battery IN the laptop which I personally think is not a good idea.
So, my score for that RMA (which is my first serious RMA) 8/10.
Customer Service on the phone was ok. Turnaround time was acceptable (2 weeks start to finish.. although they mentionned 5-6 business day on the forum). Laptop came back clean, but missing an ExpressCard dummy card.
The End?
Hope you enjoyed all the entertainment. Thank you all, you've been a great audience. I should be seeing you around on some other threads, me helping G1S owner fellows in needs, spreading words of hope...

Haha, love the disclaimer. Hey, if you have time, maybe a quick 3DMARK test to see how your temps dropped?
-
I think with a Zalman NC2000 and the CPU Cover off, my GPU never went higher than 96... -
The core of the 8600GT and 9500GS are the same the 9500GS is just a die shrink, the only difference in performance will if one is GDDR2 and the other is GDDR3.
-
good news! have fun with it!
-
The G1S shipped with the DDR3 version, but I believe the SN is the DDR2 version. I thought the 9500 had different clocks, thus was more comparable to the DDR3 version of the 8600M, not the older DDR2 version.
-
I think my personal best was 4455.
FSB : 225.5 mhz
DDR : 451 mhz
PCI-E : 105 mhz
PCI : 35 mhz
GPU core : 475 mhz
Shader : 950 mhz
Memory : 700 mhz
I wasn't able to overclock the GPU much.
actually... I was able to reach 4534 with :
218.9 FSB, 437.9 DDR, 510 Core GPU, 1020 Shader and 720 Memory.
Max temps were 66 Core and 89 GPU
That was with the 8600GT, Zalman NC2000 and CPU Cover off -
what resolution? I OC'ed to 540/1200/820 in resolution 1280x1024 i had 4800 and abit...
-
I think my system is up and ready for a first test. Didn't tweak Vista that much and only SP1 has been installed. No other updates. Debating whether I should install SP2 Beta or not...
UPDATE : So far, i am a bit disappointed.
3701 is my current score.
Stock CPU
GPU : 510 Core, 1020 Shader, 425 Memory
Max Temps : 77 Core and 82 GPU.
Zalman NC-2000 to max speed and CPU COVER ON. -
That is within range of my stock driver stock everything score. If I update the gpu drovers, I usually bump to 4k or so. I assume those are stock clocks with stock drivers?
-
I will probably try DOX soon. -
wow that is a serious downgrade :\ , my g1s was 1400 € mostly due to the 8600 Gt dd3 , and now they replace it for a "8600 Gs " . If only i Knew i would buy other models that came with the 8600 Gs and save 400 € .
-
Erm, no. They replace it with a 9500M GS which is a die shrink of the 8600M GT. Same performance on the cards, 9500M GS is more energy efficient and of course not faulty. -
although there are rumours that the whole 9XXX series could be bad too, but well see that in the future
-
Performance-wise... that makes a huge difference. -
-
I think I was able to get 3800 3DMark06 stock on the 8600GT... I was able to pass that score with the 9500GS with some fairly huge overclocking. So far, the GPU seems to respond well and temps are about 10 degrees below what a 8600GT's would probably be with the same overclocking... but I guess that is more stress on the GPU.
I know, these are only 3DMark06 scores and has nothing to do with real life gaming and yadiyadiyada, but it's a fair indication of the difference between the two GPUs -
This sounds awful. I was just thinking about sending my rig in as soon as they would answer the phones after Christmas...but there is no real successor to the G1S. There is the SG, but thats a 8700M. This would be an awesome upgrade, but I would expect its stock thermal sig to be a bit higher, thus 8600M temps all over again
I will end up sending in my rig twice. The last time I had a 'dirty fan', they cleaned it and sent it back. The temps dropped by 2 degrees, from 95C-93C. So, instead of taking my time to clean it and have them call me on it...I will just end up doing it twice. The last thing I want to do is poss off the RMA gods so close my second quarter.
-
well... a few update:
It seems that i am into some more dissapointment about my laptop.
i was trying to overclock my CPU/FSB as I was able to do so before the RMA... and well.. I CANT OVERCLOCK THE FSB!
Using SetFSB, moving the slider to only 5mhz makes the system highly unstable and crashes in so many different ways : BSOD, freezes, etc...
That is with Default GPU and Voltages.
I am suspecting damage to my RAM... Memtest86 seems to run slow... -
I was thinking of sending back for RMA as my warranty expires in about 6 mths. I can't confirm the GPU problem but mine is a A2 revision according to GPUZ. I bought my G1S in June 07 just a few weeks after released from Taiwan!
I always had stuttering of the games and of course it runs hot. But the games were still playable despite the slowdowns and in order to improve gaming I always try not to increase the settings to the higher levels.
Recently, on random times when gaming or watching a full screen screening video, the screen will just start to show artifacts like vertical lines running down the middle of the screen or just freeze. Then the computer will just reboot. I have tried to get the BSOD error message by disabling auto-restart in WinXP system properties, but it just reboots automatically. Moreover this are the times when the fan whines. I have checked my fans/vents to be clear. Even my laptop is elevated to allow airflow with my makeshift 12cm fan blowing from right to left to create more airflow.
I could not get any drivers or windows error reporting from the system log in event viewer, which usually logs system/software errors, hence I highly suspect this is a hardware (GPU) problem.
GPU idles at 71 while typing this. Riva tune is turned off. running 180.77 driver from laptopvideo2go.
I have not tried a complete reformat yet. Any1 think this is a good stand for RMA? or any suggestions are welcomed!!
Btw, how likely they will replace with a G1Sn board?
G1S killed by a zealous overclocker?
