i recently put up a thread so I could get suggestions on what notebook to get. the results were varied, with many people saying G1S, while others said Compal IFL90. although this is the asus site, what do you guys think? right now, i think i will stick to the G1S but other opinions and input would be appreciated.

You could try the Zepto 6225WD, It has 512mb of DDR3 with the 8600GT as opposed to 256mb in the G1s, The zepto is cheaper to. The new Acer Gemstone notebook also has 8600GT. The V1 Santa Rosa Refresh is also supposed to have the 8600GT, Should know in a week or two for sure. Id say dont rush into this descision, Alot more manufacturers are still updating their lines with DX10 cards.

you may want to look at the c90 which has a 8600gt 512mb. The downside is it uses a desktop processor solution so battery life and heat may be an issue. upside is you can config one for around $1700 or so that will be a true beast, and is evidently user-upgradeable. should be a very powerful dtr

The C90 isnt much of a notebook, more of a small desktop :p. The zepto notebooks can be imported from Zepto to the USA, try www.zepto.com the V1 UK refresh has the 8600GT, 1gb Ram, 2.2ghz 800mhz processor, and 160gb HD.

But then you pay about 25% GST and $100 for shipping, which puts any build of notebook with an 8600m at about the same price as the G1S while the G1S has more features (and better specs per configuration price)

Was that said tongue in cheek?

It doesn't matter what country it comes from it's the GST of the country you live in (or are importing into) that has to be paid.

You dont pay any GST and shipping is 50€ or about US$65. The global site is not great and gives you wrong prices so email them or call them.

I didnt think America had a GST. Im pretty sure the 25% gst would be for Sweden or the Denmark as they have very high GST's there.

GST will be country dependant. I know here in Australia if I import something I have to pay GST. And if I don't declare it's value to avoid the GST and get caught I have to pay $50 on top of the GST.

Well, I was in the same sort of predicament as you and decided on the G1S over the Compal IFL90 and Zepto. First off I think the Zepto is using DDR2 VRAM and not DDR3. Also, the G1S over clocked to higher speeds than did the Zepto. Proving itself more than capable if you chose to OC it.
I decided not to wait for the Compal because once I was on powernotebooks.com and had upgraded the IFL90 so its specs were on par with the G1S it was more expensive than the Asus. I encourage you to look around and exercise your consumer buying power, but dont discard the G1S like many are doing. It is an excellent notebook.

bare, if you take a look at the thread started by Ken from Gentech in the Asus forums, youll see both use DDR3, And the Zeptop performs slightly better, Of course this is all preliminary, Your best bet is to wait 2 weeks or so for actual NBR forum members to write their own personal reviews.
