Hi,
You may remember me from such threads like "G1S killed by a zealous overclocker? " and other thought-provoking, yet informative threads.
Today, I am going to discuss a weird overclocking behavior that I got with my new G1S reborn G1Sn.
Yes, I am still trying to overclocking the sh out of it.
Yes, I am the kind of person that never learns from his past mistakes.
So, I was trying to overclock the CPU/FSB of my G1Sn with SetFSB. GPU overclocking went well as my latest stable params were 535 GPU, 1275 Shader and 480 Memory (still pushing it) reaching 4213 on standard 3DMark06. But when I try to push the FSB if only by ONE MHZ, I get a few checkered patterns on my screen and either a warning that says that "nvlddmkm Display Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered." or a very bad computer freeze.
Now, that is weird. Why would overclocking the FSB would result in a Graphic Driver crashing.
Some details :
- GPU is running stock when it happens. No Riva Tuner and not even RmClock is running. So all the default speeds and voltages.
- I tried with 180.84.1 DOX, Official nVidia drivers 179.28 and LV2GO 180.43 and 177.92 drivers with the same results for all of them.
- My laptop is connected through HDMI with a DELL 2005FPW. AND IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I AM EITHER RUNNING 3DMARK06 DUAL SCREEN OR ON THE LCD...
- This is a brand new reinstallation of Vista x64 since Asus reformatted my HDD while in RMA. (I still have the drive image from the previous installation)
What the.. you might ask? Yup! If I benchmark my laptop using the laptop display screen I don't have any problems and it runs well. If I start 3DMark06 on the laptop screen and switch to the LCD screen, it also seems to run fine, though I haven't done extensive testings...
And none of this happened with my good ol'G1S....
Anyone here have a clue to what might be wrong? I checked the drivers and they all look up to date. I am trying to figure what might be missing from my previous installation

It's not so much your FSB, but the overclocked ram that is causing the errors. SetFSB automatically overclocks your ram as well as your CPU/FSB.
Your only solution is not to overclock that hard! -
Happens when OVERCLOCKING BY 1 (as in One) Mhz. -
I don't have a definite answer, but if downclocking also causes the error, my next assumption would be voltages (either too much or too little) do not provide enough stability for the ram to run properly.
-
I wonder, did they switch ram on ya?
-
changing the fsb also changes the polling rate for all controllers on the fsb (that includes pci-e). devices such as lan cards and graphics cards rely on those timings. i dont know what factors affect that it works for some and not for others, but i can only raise my fsb ~5 MHz before lan dies, and 10 before video (asus g50v, xp pro 64)
-
EDIT : I may try with new RAM today. Don't know why the RAM would be defective, though. I just know that when I ran Memtest386, it takes about 2 hours and half for the first pass. I don't remember Memtest taking so long to complete a full pass, but I have never ran Memtest with 4Gb of RAM... -
It's just weird that it only happens when my laptop is connected to a LCD screen... -
Same thing happens on my G1S when I overclock the CPU too far (from 2.4GHz to ~2.7GHz).
-
that "display driver stopped responding" thing happens when :
- the GPU speed is stock
- the CPU voltage is stock
- Dual Screen setup (Laptop LCD + LCD through HDMI) is used
- FSB is overclocked by 1 mhz or more (So FSB = 200 -> 201 mhz)
- FSB is downclocked by 1 mhz
- Used with multiple drivers versions (LV2GO, Dox, Official nVidia)
- RMClock is not running (so no messing with multipliers and voltage)
- RivaTuner is not running (so no messing with GPU speed)
- Fresh install of Vista x64
- Running Vista x64, 4 Gb of RAM. All drivers are up to date.
- Never happened with the G1S only since my G1Sn came back from RMA.
Some solutions I have read elsewhere and haven't tried :
- Removing a hotfix (KB952287 - MDAC, ?)
- Disabling AERO
- Working on one screen. (tried and it works)
- Installing KB938194
The only difference I can find with my old Vista installation is that I had customized the Vista theme...
I might try to restore my old installation but I doubt that it would work since it is not the same mobo. I tried booting the old installation from my eSATA drive (where the full image is) and it didn't work. Blue screen and something about security thingy... I know this old installation worked well... so well in fact, that I had to return my G1S... -
I have similar problem if you see my overclock 9800M GS post about my G50vt.. Here is whats odd. I have NO overclock my GPU, and when I put setFSB to make my CPU run at 2.8Ghz (Its 2.53 stock) i get the same problem, video driver error.. Whats intresting is that setFSB does not show the PCI-E clocks changing... whats more crazy is that if I use direct console instead of setFSB and clock to extreme Turbo which does 2.8 also and set the fsb to the same I did in setFSB, I do NOT get this issue... So I think setFSB is changing something else its not showing that maybe direct console is not... -
Indeed, SetFSB does not seem to affect the PCI-E clock but maybe it changes something in the background. I think I have tried two different versions of SetFSB with the same results.
I think I have read a bit of your thread. I will look into i later.
Also, What is Direct Console? How do you overclock with it? Isn't Direct Console that thing that controls the lights on the side of the LCD screen and the LED on the G1S? -
Its the Asus program... Dont know what it does on the G1s but on the G50's it controls the lights on the LCD but also controls the mini LCD screen AND the factory overclocking, which just seems to changes FSB to overclock if you check in CPU-z during an overclock... But my only guess is something is diffrent in the background between its overclock and the setFSB... maybe the setFSB needs to be updated by the dev... It does not really support our chipset it just so happens we found what option to pick that makes it work... But something has to be diffrent...
I dont know if maybe someone can mod DirectConsole to do on the G1s as it does on the G50 so you can at least overclock some. -
Anyone knows if the PLLs for the G1S and G1Sn are the same? I guess they would be since only the only difference between the two is the GPU (mobo-wise, not laptop-wise) -
A little update on the solutions I posted earlier :
- Removing a hotfix (KB952287 - MDAC, ?) -> Tried, didn't work
- Disabling AERO -> Also didn't do anything.
- Working on one screen. (tried and it works)
- Installing KB938194 -> Does not apply to me
I was able to boot my backup partition from the eSATA backup HDD and I had to reinstalled the GPU drivers. Tried to overclock the CPU with SetFSB and didn't work.
So let me ask this simple question : "Does anyone here have experience overclocking the CPU/FSB on a G1Sn?" -
... So.. basically, of all the G1S n users here on this board, NONE of them have tried to overclock their CPU by overclocking the FSB?
-
My G1Sn is underclocking my CPU to 999mhz when plugged in the outlet. I already replaced my mobo from Asus. I will return next week and report it again. Even Asus has a hardtime identifying the error of my laptop.
-
I have a G1Sn-B1 and I have not tried overclocking the CPU. I can get massive OC's with Rivatuner. I haven't tried in a while because I have an issue right now, but best ever was:
3DMark06 (1024x768)
177.79: 5962 Overclocked: 655-1524-488 Maximum Overclock (Stable)
Yup, that's 5962 dude! Crysis, completely stable, Shaders & Shadows = High, the rest = Very High. 1440x900.
I haven't OC'ed the CPU, but if I did, I would use SetFSB. Last I checked, it still didn't work on x64, and it didn't support this notebook. Does it now? Apparently not, right.
Maybe someone here can help me. For some reason, lately I'm getting a 4.4 subscore for my CPU in the Vista Ratings. I'm also getting low CPU scores in all other apps. that test it (3DMark... ). I have tried flashing BIOS, updating all relative drivers (INF, Matrix, etc.), and also did a complete reinstall 4 times now. I can't figure it out, for the life of me, what's going on. I also thought that it might be the media ASUS gave me, so I downloaded a Vista retail ISO, and same thing. ! PLEASE HELP! Any suggestions? -
UPDATE :
So far, I've been pushing my graphic card further in a not-so-optimized environment (at work, on a wooden desk with my NC2000 instead of at home on a DIY laptop stand, with the NC2000).
I maxed out the memory at 490 mhz. I got weird lines and artifact during the Canyon Flight test in 3Dmark06. So I lowered it down to 480.
So, at 620/1420/480 in 3Dmark06 standard @ 1280x1024, I get 4465 points. Max temp for GPU is 87 celsius. CPU reaches 71 celsius. -
I own an Asus G1sn laptop;
Running Vista X64 with 4 gig of ram.
chipset intel Pm965
Southbridge 82801 HBM (ICH8-me)
Been testing setFSB set at ICS9LPR363DGLF and have been able to OC to 2500MHz
Intel Core Duo T7500 2,2 GHz.
Try to get it up to 2600 but blue screen of death and reboot happens.
using Orthos to stress the ram and cpu and remain stable 40 minutes.
I stopped the test after this time.
Also using Intel thermal Analysis Tool
See the screen shot of my desktop.
Hope this will help some of youAttached Files:

also... I noticed you overclocked the PCI-E bus, did you? -
After reinstalling drivers, I got the gpu to work normally but as soon as it goes to 3d performance, I get the same as you: "nvidia drivers stopped responding and recovered" along with some graphical glitches.
I also tried 220 and 240 fsb but they bring so much problems on the first steps of testing (even on max voltage) so im not even going to go down that road. I'd be happy with 210 fsb but there's something odd going on under the hood. So, any info about the G1Sn and setfsb would be greatly appreciated.
e: oh, by the way, im only running on the laptop screen. No external monitor atm. -
CPU-FSB Overclock + GPU Overclock = NVLDDMKM.SYS failed. -
Mine has a T7250 processor, but doubt it matters any. Guess just got to clock the hell out of the GPU.. shame, would like some insight on this.
edit: yeah btw, running Windows 7 x64 build 7048. -
Just thought to post a little update, I have hooked up external 22" monitor through the HDMI and the same keeps happening. Didn't you say you had no problems with 1 monitor ?
-
Actually... I *think* I never had a problem with the laptop monitor ONLY... but last time I tested... I also had the problem in single monitor.
Little update : I was a bit tired of trying to get more performance out of this laptop since it came back from RMA... I tried to work around it but i couldn't. I was looking for something a bit more powerful (GX620, MS-1651)... but decided to go back to a desktop as I don't need the mobility anymore.
So I sold my laptop and i should be building myself a decent laptop soon.
Sorry I can't help you anymore. -
Ah, sorry to hear. Oh well, guess this'll just go down as another mystery no one has the ambition to really work out, me included
Easier to cut the losses.
-
look i had a g1sn and the behavior is only in X64 versions of windows. 32 bit works. and as far as the graphics goes i had it up to 625-1325-835 stable no overheating
and using setfsb are you using the correct pll? ICS9LPR363DGLF. this one also works for g50vt's too.
-
Always used Vista x64. Had the same problem with Windows 7 x64 Beta.
How can you get 835Mhz on GPU Mem Speed... Mine was stock at 400mhz and chocked at 450 mhz or so... DDR3 ? -
-
sorry i meant 435 which would be 870 after it is doubled since it is ddr2.
and in the latest version of setfsb i did get it to work but it took a long time before that could happen. -
Great news guys!
I actually asked the setfsb maker if he could find a bug with the PLL. After some time, he sent me a test version 2.2.100.75c that has a fixed PCI-E and PCI frequencies. The problem went away! Running fsb 210mhz and overclocked GPU and didn't crash yet. So far so good. -
aw well.... maybe i will have more fun with an e8400 + gtx 260... -
Heh, sorry bout that.. but yeah, I wouldnt mind either, though like my laptop too much to change back to desk.
-
.. well... I may be able to test it after all since my laptop still hasn't been delivered to the buyer. UPS did try three times to delivery it and collect COD (buyer's request, no comments please) and they haven't had success. Dude knew since last thursday that I would get the laptop AND needed the total amount for the COD.
If they are not able to delivery it next Monday, the laptop will be return to me (maybe at my expense) and I will have lost the shipping fees (included in the COD)...
.. so much for trying to sell a laptop across the border. -
By the way, im about to buy 800mhz RAM for the laptop. I think even at 220fsb (880 cpu fsb) the ram is running at the limits. I experienced a few game crashes at 220 and checked the ram, it was running at 366 (or close), 720-730mhz effective. 667mhz rated generic ram isn't going to handle much more, if even that. Well, going to play safe anyway and see if it helps, 800mhz ddr2 notebook ram costs pennies anyway these days.
-
I have a set a Buffalo Select 800mhz that I used for about a few weeks, because I thought at the time that the reason why I was not able to overclock the FSB was the RAM... but it wasn't.
<wailing>
Wish I had my laptop right now... I think it would comfort me a bit knowing that I could push it a little bit more than what I thought I could. This has been a crappy idea to sell this laptop (first, wanted to buy a MSI barebone to replace the G1s(n), decided to ask for a refund... still waiting for the refund - should be in the mail. Then I finally sell the laptop, buyer ask for COD and agreed to it. Buyer can't take delivery of laptop... waiting some more... good thing is no COD, no laptop.. but might end up with the laptop AND a 200$ CAD shipping bill...)
</wailing> -
Just thought to post a quick update, after replacing the memory to 800mhz, I've yet to experience a single crash in anything running 230fsb. Got a cooler too, GPU running at 600/460.
-
anyway... I may get my laptop back next week, since the buyer still hasn't taken delivery of the laptop. right now, it's sitting in a UPS warehouse and waiting to be picked up...
but I am glad to read that this laptop is a good overclocker... I know the GPU was... -
... seems like I am having my wish granted... laptop is coming back next week... stupid mofo left the country... laptop never arrived on time for him...
so basically, i am out by 200$ CAD and with a laptop that I don't feel like keeping... despite being a nice overclocker...
(I had my mind set on a Asus 1000HE + Antec 902/C2D/4 Gb RAM/ATI HD 4870/etc system... guess this will have to wait.) -
Sorry to hear
-
-
Just thought to post an update, changed the thermal pastes on cpu and gpu recently. The difference is huge, currently gpu is running at 675/1350/481 and haven't seen any artifacts yet. Temps stay under 90C and peak at 85 during 3dmark. Recent results in sig

Nice! Unfortunately, I bid farewell to my G1S(n) this weekend when I sold it to my in-laws (i know, that also means a lifetime of tech support)...
... didn't have to patience to try to get the max out of DDR2 on the 9500m GS. I took the coward way out : I bought a desktop!
