Every so often I hear this bizarre but very noticeable "clicking" noise pop once or twice from what seems to be the front right of my G1S. It *sounds* like it might be the hard-drive, but I can't be sure...

Anyone else get this? Know what it is?

Usually it is not normal and it is a sign of HDD failure.

However I have noticed that some HDDs do make this sort of sound without failing. Like my 160GB Seagate Momentus 5400.3.

Take into account some HDDs, like Hitachi HDDs, are louder than others.

To be on the safe side use the manufacturer's utility to do the SMART test on the hdd.

I got tired of that ticking sound and bought Samsung SMG M5S 250GB 2.5" drive (which is really silent) and use the original ticking Hitachi as an external USB-drive. :)

i am having the same sound issues! i just bought mine a couple of days ago and from the moment i turned it on i am hearing those strange clicking noises coming from the upper right corner of the laptop! is it possible that there is no solution besides buying another hard disk? i find this very hard to believe and very difficult to digest! :-S

Seagate or WD had a problem with a series of HDDs that required a firmware upgrade to the drive to correct the noise they were making - turned out that it was caused by a problem with a command request from the CPU to the HDD. You can always try searching the support link at Hitachi's web site to see if anything has been reported for your particular model needing correction.

I have the A6 laptop which the G1 is based on and it IS the hard drive which ticks a lot. I dont think you have to worry.

I came to the conclusion that it is the head parking and is caused by the hard disk accoustic setting being set to quiet?/something similar instead of performance

Yeah, that's what I think as well. There is another thread around talking about the same issue and it seems it happens in certain power-saving modes. Perhaps the HDD parks the head more often in those modes.
