I'm pretty much decided that I want to get an Asus system, and I'm sitting on the fence between the G1S and the G2S. I don't really need the extra screen real estate, and don't know if I can justify the extra $200 for the G2S.

However, I've been seeing a lot of threads lately about bugs with the G1's system. For example, the thread about the screen being "Grainy" and the thread about the CPU power sitting at 50% when the battery's at <90%.

I haven't seen any threads like this for the G2S. Is the system more reliable/glitch free, or have all the bugs simply been worked out and I missed them? While I can't justify the $200 for the larger screen, It may be worth it to avoid the headaches associated with the problems the G1S seems to have.

Another factor in my decision is the ability to boot Windows XP, either by itself or as a dual-boot (certain applications, such as Novell, are required by my school and are not Vista compatable). I know that I would have to install the OS myself, but would there be any problems doing this to a G2S? I've seen walkthroughs and threads for dual-booting a G1S, but no such guide for the G2.

Some resellers will install windows xp (I know xoticpc will, but you'll have to contact gentec and btotech to see if they will) for you. It is not difficult, but you will need some drivers for the hard drive for the installation.

There is something else I wanted to point out. I've had a 17" laptop and it was a pain to carry around and trying to find enough desk space to put on. If you need a portable computer go with 15" or less.

If the G1S has bugs then the G2S will too, unless you configure your G2S from Xotic differently then stock config. But at stock config, both the G1 and 2 have the exact same hareware in it, just the G2 screen is bigger.

True, but Asus seems to be putting out new BIOS and drivers faster for the G2s than for the G1s for some reason.

I have a G2S, and the only problems I've had are isolated cases. Probably the reason you haven't heard of G2S problems is because they're just not as popular as the G1S from what I've seen :)

Since the G2S and the G1S have the same hardware, except the screen, wouldn't the drivers/BIOS/etc for the G2S work for both?

the g2s has a tv tunner and that enough for the g2s bios to stop the g1s keyboard from working. For drivers , they are the same for both models

BIOSes are not fully compatible, be very careful with that you might render your computer unusable. In fact, I would advise never ever to write a BIOS that was not specifically released for that machine.

And I agree that you have seen so many problems with the G1S simply because it is a hugely popular machine. More machines bought => more problems reported. It's a statistical fact :) It doesn't mean that the G1 is worse than the G2. (that might still be true though but for other reasons)

There no inherent hardware defects with either. atm g1s bios is hard coded to reduce cpu performance when battery is charging to 90%. Some people may think it is a big deal. I think of it as reduced performance while battery is charging to 90%. there was a whole thread about this in the asus section

I really don't see the big deal on the charging issue. It's not like its crippling your gaming performance beyond playability.

just try to play colin dirt at 1280x800 medium while charging the battery. you just have half the cpu power. if this is not a big thing then what is ?
