I just recently came across a thread that shows a C90S that had its 8600m GT replaced with a 9600m GT and I was left wondering if anyone has upgraded their G1S/G1Sn GPU from the 8600/9500 in a similar way?
Is the GPU soldered in?

Its not legal to replace the GPU with a weaker GPU without our Agreement.
I called Asus Hotline today, and belive me or not..... Asus dont even know, that they change the mainboards with GF 9500 Gs....
The service worker tald me not to exept these kind of change. -
Today I am sending my G1S away to get the same repair so I am left on this crap HP notebook combing the forums over and over trying to find out what I should do about getting a 9500 :/
-
it's soldered on. impossible. changing the gpu means changing the whole mobo.
-
Yehh ... a new mobo + new gpu....

This is a very interesting thread im surprised there are no more replies. So we are issued a defective part, the warranty repalces it with an inferior yet stable component and everyone is ok with that? Last time i checked the GPU is one of the most expensive components in a laptop so its ok to downgrade? And what does it mean that Asus cant change the GF8600 for the GF9500 without our permission... is there a choice? Because from what i have seen people are experiencing a 25%-30% loss in performance (at least on synthetic benchmarks)...

My G1S just died too. 8600M GT die packaging fault. I'm waiting for the courier to come pick it up at the moment.
I personally am happy to accept the 9500M GS.
My 8600M GT has always run hot and had severe stuttering issues which you can read about on this forum with a quick search.
The 9500M GS is a 8600M GT. The difference in performance is due to the GDDR3 on the 8600M GT.
I don't really use my notebook for gaming these days so having a cooler running notebook which isn't faulty is a winning compromise imo. -
Sofar as i know, Asus cant change the GPU without my permission. They have to ask if its ok or not. Since they replaced it without a word, i see my contract blown with my seller / asus. -
You might want to read your warranty brochure before you say that your contract was blown with Asus.
You have a faulty GPU on your mobo. They must change your mobo. mobo is discontinued so Asus gives you the closest mobo they have in stock. New mobo fits in current laptop, bingo! Unfortunately it's the G1Sn mobo. Same mobo, just different GPU. oh.... GPU is 9500 which is a die-shrink, next generation replacement for the 8600GT except with DDR2 instead of DDR3 for less heat. period. -

What do they take me for?
Since there are two versions of GF9500 GS (400 / 700) its just a hoax. -
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Of course its a hoax. Nvidia love to rename cards and make almost no changes. Its been that way since they released the 8800 GTX and destroyed the competition. Now however ATI are returning to the fray and I hope they kick (literally) nvidia back into touch! Monopolies are always bad news for consumers I think the past few years nvidia has had a mini monopoly...
I think most people will stay clear of the GT 130M for example as it clearly is yet another rename in this circumstance the 9600/50M GT. Pretty pathetic and hopefully ATI will reap the benefits of this mistake. -
Something new.... Asus gonna remove the G1sn from my NB, and replace it with the "Right" Mainboard.
Ahh ... and they really sorry.... LOL -
-
The G1Sn GPU may have a better chance of not suffering from the "bad bumps" syndrome of many NVIDIA GPU. In that case it would have much better chance of handling many heating/cooling cycles WITHOUT breaking down. Add on top of that the really poor cooling performance of the G1 series.
Hence they were possibly doing you a service by replacing the G1S with the G1Sn mobo+GPU.
I would prefer having a slightly slower GPU that is actually going to last... rather than having a slightly faster one that would be almost certain to break within 1 to 2 years.
All this is modulo the assumption that the G1Sn GPU actually fixed the problem. -
is it possible to convince asus to give you a replacement instead? like say a G50? I am darn tempted to go down to a service centre and talk my way through..
if they give you a replacement, whats the warranty for the new notebook? does it restart 2 years from the replacement date? -
I think the ASUS policy is that after 3 repairs for the same fault, they will give a replacement. The warranty does not restart however.
PS: Please avoid double posting, I have removed your identical post from the other thread. Thanks! -
In other words, don't take the replacement, get the money back from youre seller, and buy a DELL.
-
Well, Asus has some additional GF8600GT Mainboards, got my G1s back yesterday with the Right GPU.
G1S(n) GPU upgrade?
