I finally gave up on Vista and installed XP. My only problem is with the headphone jack - when I connect a headset or external speakers the internal laptop speakers are muted, but I get not sound from my headset/speaker. I tried the realtek 1.84 drivers, the 1.65 and the 1.44 - all of them act the same. The other two jacks are autodetected and works.
I've tried both enabling and disablind the S/PDIF output, no change. I did notice that I cannot change the volume on the S/PDIF regardless of whether it is enabled or not. I have tried re-installing XP, and even tried installing SP3 - no change.
Any thoughts?

Seems like a driver bug... other than different driver versions (and you've already tried 3) I don't know what else to suggest.
Did you try looking at the support.asus.com ? Maybe identify your particular audio card, then look for an older notebook with the same audio card, but for which ASUS supports XP; then download the XP driver for that model. -
Sound advice. I did download and installt the Asus G1 XP audio driver, but no luck. Anyone with a G1S and XP gotten the headphone jack to work? Maybe it is down to a registry setting?
G1S-WinXP No sound from audio jack
