    Hi,

My g1s-a1 started acting up last week. It was working fine until one day when I left it on standby, went to work and when I got back and turned it on I heard Vista's usual sound but not even a flicker on the screen.

I reset it, heard the asus sound, heard vista boot up and give the `welcome sound` but still nothing on the screen.

Looked at the screen hooked up via hdmi, no life there. hooked it up through vga, no life.

disconnected it from power, removed the battery and left it alone. 24h later it started working like normal. for a whole week.

Now the same problem. I hear asus' sound, vista booting up and no life on the screen.

I tried removing the rams, changed the hdd, removed the battery, still nothing. Since I hear that it boots into vista I guess that it isn't related to the ram or the hdd, so this only leaves the graphics card, but then is it `normal` for it to work a few days and then again not for another few? Wouldn't the laptop `not boot at all` if there was a problem with the graphics card? I remember the good old days when the motherboards used to beep when there was a problem with your agp or pci graphics card and nothing would move until you fixed it...

    anyone??

ps: sorry if someone has already posted a problem relating to this but neither a search on the forum, nor on google turned up anything usable for me...

pps: I know that nvidia has some problems with some of its mobile chipsets. could this be connected? as far as I know the bugs show when the gpu gets warm and I haven't been playing any games for the last month + the laptop was on standby on both occasion this happened...

@ _bare: was your botting also into windows etc? I see that you were hearing the asus sound, so it seems very close... my problem with sending it back to asus is that I bought it from the US, have the warranty in the us but am not iun the us atm. and couldn't get hold of the local asus people yet. they don't answer their phones :S :S guess I'll have to ship it back to them...

It could be connected to the infamous(ly) alleged nVidia fault, but it's not at all clear...

But it does sound like the GPU is failing or has failed. I would suggest you to RMA the notebook and get the GPU exchanged. Yes, there are intermittent faults that will cause components to work for a while, and then not work for a while, and then work again. Not all defects kill the component right away. :)

The ASUS warranty is international, so you should be able to get service close to your current location. Be aware that a few countries in Europe have bad feedback on ASUS support though -- see the info booth for details.
