    Hi all

Good to see so many users active here, so I thought I'd ask you guys for some help.

Received a new G1s last week (2.2ghz / 2gb RAM / 8600m GT etc), but have been tearing my hair out over games performance which is not what I expected from a "gaming laptop"

I've built several desktops in the past so know my way around a system, but here I'm puzzled...

To be specific, even a relatively light game such as WOW will run at 50-90 fps, but will regularly stutter or "hitch" and pause, at the same time as HDD activity takes place, often when turning. Is this because of Turbocache? Vista? or something else? I've tried various drivers from laptopvideo2go and Asus, to no avail. Also have removed bloatware and disabled unnecessary services.

Hoping someone can suggest something and help me to enjoy my new baby...

    Thanks all

I don't understand what you're talking about. Please be more specific about what problems you are encountering with your G1s.

I'm running most of my games at the highest settings, the only exceptions being STALER (a poorly optimized game) and Company of Heroes. That's even before overclocking

Bisonman80 and _Bare, thanks for your responses.

To be specific, I am getting poor 3d performance with my G1s, running games such as World of Warcraft (a game which even my old Sony Vaio could cope with), and Lord of the Rings Online . The problem is periodic HDD access which occurs at the same time as mini "freezes" in the gameplay.

All drivers (chipset, wireless, audio, etc) are up to date and I have tried various drivers (100.xx's and 163.11's) for the 8600M, using Driver Cleaner in between installs to remove any remnants.

My thoughts were that Turbocache accessing system RAM might be an issue, or just plain old Vista working in the background.

I'm stuck for what to try next - other than to try and revert to XP somehow!

Any suggestions welcomed - am off now to try another defrag and disk cleanup as suggested

Np, I dont know really what to tell you then. I have heard of people having these sort of issues and making the switch back to XP fixed them. But if others dont have this problem then Im not sure if that would be to practical. Ill keep an eye out for any fixes I might come across and let you know. It also might be worthwhile to contact Asus Tech support.

Don't think its to do with amount of RAM - Task manager shows maximum of 1.2 gigs used out of 2gb, and WoW runs perfectly well on a 1gb, 1.66ghz Sony Vaio.

Thanks for the thought, however. I do appreciate all these responses but nothing has worked yet. In the post referenced by _bare above, it turned out to be a driver issue but they didn't say which one worked!!

I have also raised this with Asus techsupport (in hope) and perhaps someone on these forums has been having same issue. If so, we may be able to get this sorted.

I had this exact same issue with a 7900GS Go on Vista but not with my G1S.

If it is true that it glitches momentarily when accessing from the hard drive, then I think you pretty much narrowed it down right there. It isn't your drivers or anything like that, I am guessing you are using a somewhat low density (100? 120GB?) low speed (5400RPM?) HDD, which has a small amount of cache space, and when the rest of the system uses all of that info up faster than it can replenish it, it glitches until it catches up.

The 160gb drive that comes with the g1s would not experience such problems. A 5400 drive is more than sufficient to adequately serve any game. The only thing that would be affected is loading times. The G1 drive is a HITACHI Travelstar 5K160 HTS541616J9SA00, which has a sizable 8mb cache. I think the problem would definitely be related to drivers.

So then - a driver issue seems a likely reason. Any G1s users out there like to suggest a good trouble-free forceware driver?

Big thanks to all who have responded so far. First time Ive posted here and I'm impressed :)

As I read this I kept thinking "HDD, HDD" and Alex nailed it. I sounds like your HDD is bottlenecking you system. Is is a 5400RPM? (or lower!?!).

A 160gb 5400 rpm Hitachi, yes. But a 4200 rpm works fine in my Sony Vaio with the same game. Still, 5400 160gb is the standard spec for a G1s gaming laptop so didn't expect there to be an issue... ?

    Yay, i quoted myself.
In any case, drive speed doesn’t cause games to shutter (maybe if it was really low). The drive in the G1s is perfectly suitable for gaming.
A good review can be found at http://laptoplogic.com/reviews/detail.php?id=156&part=full&page=1

    It's probably a driver issue.

Yes Mr Mill, I got the 1.71 package, driver is dated 10th july. No help, I'm afraid - but good suggestion, sometimes these things are not directly video related....

Would still be curious to know if any other G1s users are running WoW smoothly and if so the drivers they use? This is driving me nuts!!

    Thanks all

This might be really stupid question, but do you have cable. It could be that your internet connection has slowed for whatever reason. If I recall correctly cable acts like a party line the more people in your area on at once the slower it gets. I once had my connection drop from around 3-4mbps to 100 kilobytes. I noticed the difference in fear and ran an internet speed test. The next day it was fine, so I assume they must have been having some difficulty. Have you experienced stutter in any other offline games. However, if you can currently run wow fine on your vaio that wouldn’t be the problem.

Thank you again - in my view no question is stupid in these cases, it may well be something oddball like that, but you are right, the Vaio (and my custom built desktop) run things just fine. I have an ADSL 8mb line.

Problem is the Vaio is going to the wife, while I am supposed to have gaming nirvana on my new G1s. Instead I spend all night cursing the thing! Will try some offline stuff to see if any problem, but losing hope here....

Are you playing with the same settings as your Vaio? Some of these settings could be causing much more data to be read or displayed. Try using the exact settings as you Vaio (or as exact as you can get them) and see if it gives the same performance. Then, one setting at a time, change it to see what makes the difference.

    My guess is RAM, though.

I saw a huge boost in performance on my XP rig (while playing WOW) going to 2 Gigs of RAM (don't let that monitor in Task Manager fool you, you have some stuff paged out to your page file, guaranteed). Vista is a much bigger memory hog. In addition, this system can use up to 768 Megs of system RAM for the video if needed. You could easily be hitting the limit.

OK thanks for all the help - gonna try going back to 163.11 as _bare suggested, and reinstalling the realtek 1.71 package, althogh thats already installed. After that not sure what else I can do - RAM upgrade is not really an option as already have 2x 1gb in there - G1s only has two slots, right?

Once again a big thank you to everyone who has tried to help so far - keep the suggestions coming, as I'll try just about anything except voodoo now....

Lol. At this point Voodoo might be a good investment. And yes, the G1S has 2 RAM slots.

This maybe obvious but are you sure that your G1S is in "High Performance" power mode? I'm not sure how much of a performance hit you would take if you were in Quiet Office or Battery Saving mode but it would be an easy solution if it were the case.

Do you mean Complete freeze of system along with Adio freezes for like 3 -5 seconds then back to normal?

My Z84J does that also. There' re might be hardware problem. I 'm not ready to send mine to repair yet cause ihave no other computer to work with.

    Thanks all for your replies:

Yes, Power4gear shows high performance mode 100%

No the freezes are much shorter, only 1 second.

Looks like solution is either voodoo, or updating drivers until one works, possibly a complete reinstall of the OS? If not, then I can feel an RMA coming on...   Not too impressed with this "Gaming Laptop" over here!!

Ok, thanks Warpstorm, thats worth a try - have ordered a 2gb stick today, as I guess it can't hurt to have more RAM anyway. I can see other G1s users, like _bare do have 3gb in their G1s system.

Will update this thread if it helps - if anyone else has any better ideas I'm still listening!!

Lappy what you are experiencing is not a ram or HDD issue, it is a GPU driver issue. The SAME exact thing happened to me on my 7900GS Go, verbatim. Do a google search for 7900GS Go Stuttering.

I haven't tried WoW yet on this machine so I can't vouch if it happens or not but this was a Vista driver problem on the 7900GS which is partly the reason I sold my "Vista Ready" P105-S9722.

There is also the oddball chance you have a flat out buggy system. Try turning down your audio acceleration in control panel. For some reason that helped me on EQ2.

I'll make a trial account for WoW and see if I have the same problem. Also, post your DXDiag for me.

Start->dxdiag->Save all information and just copy/paste the text.

I Use the 163.11 drivers and I play both WOW, and LotrO on my G1s. However I never used on 2G of ram, Always 4g (I know it only see's 3!!) On WOW I max settings and LotrO High settings, Never had a Stutter, Maybe a LAg spike every now and again. The only stutters I have found are in games that aren't optimized for vista yet, like Rb6Vegas, etc.. Good Luck

OK here goes - apologies for length of post, cannot post attachments. btw, was unable to find audio acceleration, assume this went west when MS redesigned the Vista audio structure - no DirectSound any more.

Come to think of it, this stuttering did show up on my dell 1705 with 7900GS on windows XP, too. In CS, there was a random less than 1 sec freeze usually when a new sound popped up or I turned a corner and saw someone. I could see that it was my computer's fault, because I could hear the hd accessing or hitting something and the connection was showing red (dropped packets) for the freeze period.

This might be a far out to the left question but are you using anything like a flash drive to increase your available memory? Your DXDiag looks fine to me.

Check your GPU/CPU/HDD Temperatures using Everest and Rivatuner. I know my Asus gets really effin hot even through the keyboard where the hard drive is.

Have you removed the Asus Bloatware as well?

This includes Asus Splendid, Multiframe, Data Storage Manager, Norton Internet Security Suite, Live Update. You don't need any of these to operate and they honestly just waste space.

I've also read that Live Update causes system hangs.

Live Updates is a must to UNINSTALL, it hogs up a lot of memory and is beyond buggy.

Definitely no bloatware - took me half a day to get rid of it all   and no readyboost either. Temps are fine CPU @28 ,HDD @ 40 idle, but Everest / RT won't report GPU temps - will have to reinstall 163.11's I suspect.

Bump - any more ideas here? So far tried everything suggested, except RAM upgrade which must wait until RAM arrives in a couple of days. Still stuttering performance and excessive HDD access during games. Most evidence points to a driver issue, what drivers are ppl using to run games smoothly?

I like RivaTuner for monitoring GPU temps, here is a good guide for setting it up.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=81852
Also, I havent had any problems with the 163.11 driver but it isnt WHQL signed, maybe you should give this a try:
    http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPHICS-BOARD/NVIDIA/NVIDIA-ForeWare-GeForce-Go-10117-WHQL.shtml
It could possibly be a RAM defect on your video card. Ive been googling the problem and been through several pages regarding stuttering problems that are only occurring in one game which get fixed by a patch, or someone upgrades there video card or adds more RAM and that fixes it. However, if the stuttering you experience occurs in every application or game and new drivers don't seem to fix the problem, it could be a defect with your video card RAM or system memory. It would explain why you cant fix it with simple driver updates.

16 x 10 with most settings on high but have turned off a few settings in my search for an improvement with no result. have tried lower resolutions all the way down to 1280 x 800, and lowering texture detail to prevent thrashing the memory on the 8600. No joy.

Thanks _bare , will give the 101.17's a go, can't hurt to try them. 163.11 has definitely been the "best" driver so far (or is that "least worst" ?)

For some reason not able to get RT to show any temperature atm, only 0 degrees with the 163.11's - maybe need to reinstall it to rebuild databases. I definitely did get a temp reading when I first used it but messing with drivers has probably screwed RT up. Awesome reference post though, will go through that in detail when I reinstall RivaTuner.

Once again, much appreciated all you guys are trying to do to help, and I'll keep trying what you suggest. Will have to be tomorrow now, as its 1am UK time and time to turn in...

Well this stuttering seems to be a growing problem, or at least one that many people have/are experiencing. So, it would be nice to figure this thing out and give others a place of reference.Oh, and regarding WoW stutter, I just saw this fix a guy posted. It might be worth looking at even if he is running a 6800 not 8600.

"I was able to correct this problem. If anyone is having this issue, this is what worked for me.

    Uninstall World of Warcraft;
    Install latest nVidia drivers;
    Restart;
    Reinstall WoW;
Update to 1.3.0 patch (Blizzard Downloader is faster because it will pull from a different file than 1.2.4-to-1.3.0.exe)

I found that the patch from fresh install to newest is safer and more reliable than updating from a previous patch. Give this a whirl. All the lagging, stuttering, and game drops have stopped and I am again experiencing smooth gameplay."

Your CPU is running at 28*C? That's pretty damn cold mano. Most G1S idle at anywhere from 40-60.

That does seem pretty low, maybe he is using one of the lower power modes. Check you power management settings, make sure you have it set for max performance.

Everest should tell you what frequency your CPU is running at. Make sure it's running at 2.2ghz.

That temperature is seriously low and I'm wondering if your CPU is throttled back for some reason.

OK now things are looking a bit more serious

CPU-Z shows the processor most of the time at 1.2 ghz and multiplier 6, occasionally changing to 2.2 ghz and multiplier 11. Performance is maximum with sliders at 100%. think something is clearly wrong here. Have emailed reseller for an RMA and replacement and also raised this with Asus tech support.

The multiplier will increase when there is need for higher performance (the throttling or the reduce of the multiplier is done automatically to reduce power consumption and heat generation)
Run a CPU intensive program like the wPrime and then see the CPu multiplier.
Did you try de-fragging your hard-drive ? this is also a common cause for the stuttering.
