The G1s came with a 8600m gt. It was clocked at 475 for Core and 700 for Memory. On Nvidia's website, 8700m gt is listed at 625 for Core, and 800 for Memory. I heard people say that the 8700m gt is basically an oveclocked 8600m gt. So I decided to try this on my G1s. I overclocked the card to the specs the same as the 8700m gt, and ran 3dmark06 at a resolution of 1280x1024.

Up came the results, and I noticed that I have gotten 4298. :) Almost broke 4300, but it was similar to the results of the real 8700m gt. ;) Temperature is logged with Nvidia Monitorview, this was done in a cold AC room.

Great work guys. However, maybe you can help me out. I have a G1S also, currently running stock speeds. I tried overclocking with nTune and drivers from laptopvideo2go.com (163.44) but the settings won't stick. It always reverts back to stock speeds.

What did you have to do to enable overclocking? Stock drivers? Alter the GPU BIOS?

The 163.44 driver doesn't allow OC, that's the only downside of the driver in my opinion.

The real question is whether your system is able to maintain stability after prolonged exposure to heavy gaming. It would also be interesting to compare temperatures of the 8700M GT to the overclocked 8600M GT. If the 8700M GT doesn't run any cooler, it's definitely just overclocked version of 8600M GT.

The rumors that 8700M GT is just an overclocked 8600M GT is only partially true - all 8700M GT cards use GDDR3 memory while 8600M GT may use DDR3 or DDR2 memory.

EDIT: 90° C is pretty high although you only hit that temp for a short period of time...at least only during that benchmark.

Is there any program that can test the stability of the graphic card?

It was done with stock drivers that came with the G1s.

If the 8600M GT is MXM 2 and the 8700M GT is MXM 3 then there is also some difference in terms of shape, perhaps size and I thought power consumption. So if you can get similar specs by just OCing then I'd say the 8700M isn't living up to the hype.

Has anyone tried to bench a 8600M GT 256MB DDR3 edition in a C90S, I'm really interested in the results considering the hardware. There both MXM 2 modules by the same maker in the same generation, so they should be interchangeable.

I get 3902 with the default clocks (475/700) on my G1S with the 163.44 drivers. Does anyone know the latest driver version that still allows overclocking?

You have to save the profile under the profile menu, then have it load under 'adjust custom rules' on boot. Kind of a pain and unneeded extra step to me.

for you guys that push the gpu above 600, you are pushing it too much. Don't beleave me ?? forget 3dmark, download and install atitool , press show 3d view and wait, i'll give you some minutes until your desktop gives you image problems and your temps will be above 3dmarks.

If you read the forum, i'm the one that has the g1s gpu overclocked from bios and i'm making alot of testing. atitool will give you problem at that clocks

Don't forget that the 8700 is a STOCK "overclocked" 8600. I say this because the 8700 also has great oc features.

Yeah you guys are comparing this incorrectly. You are overclocking your 8600s to near the max or the max to get stock 8700. Now if the 8700 clocks it to the max then it will be signifigantly more powerful. Also don't forget the optimized bus is also a factor in its performance.

Still its encouraging to see these results.

    Just for comparison...

My 8700GT (with only a C2D 7100 behind it) OC'd to 775/938 (68C max over 4 hours) gets 5194 at 1280x1024. (tested on an external monitor as my x205 has a native res of 1440x900.)

note my 8700 runs most games at 800/1000 but 3dmark06 will not complete at that clock. Reminder that even at that extreme clock the 8700 can still game on my lap without so much as a singed hair.

It is also fair to note that 3dmark06 has a "processor" section in which the G1S and G2S are going to score higher with their 2.2GHz processors over my 1.8GHz processor which adds a bias to the comparison.

That score is recorded with the default Toshiba driver... If I can ever get 163.44 to OC, we will likely be looking at well over a 5200 at 1280x1024.

Agreed, 163.44 are incredible (but disable you from OCing even if you roll back, uninstall and driver cleaner) and with the 8700M is what I mend with the whole the OCed 8600M is is just the 8700M on standard clock.

I'm still curios with the preformence difference between the 8600M DDR2 and DDR3 in a C90S.

I'm using 163.44 and just in gaming mode I get a score of about 3560 in 3DMark'06.
