Hi,
I have the G1s as well and I looking for a way to boost my laptop a little. Mainly because I use it for Flight Simulator X, and my framerate is average sometimes.
I thought about upgrading the CPU, but according to what I read, I may start by upgrading the RAM first.
I have 2x1Go of DDRII 667MHz (PC2-5300 I guess). I'm thinking about replacing it by 1x2Gb of PC2-6400 (DDR2-800)
The FSB processor is 800.
Is that good ? Should I expect better performance ?
Thanks.
Sebastien

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Nope, sorry
.
If I read your post correctly, you're swapping the same amount of RAM, and moving to single channel isn't going to do anything for you. Plus, the RAM speed is likely going to get downclocked by the chipset to 667 anyway. If you want to boost RAM, and 2GB for Windows and most games is plenty to begin with, you could get a 2GB stick of matching speed PC2-667 RAM and putting that into one slot.
FSX is stressful software that, depending on settings, can make a mess of framerates - and you're only running an "average" two-generation old mainstream gpu in the G1S. In any event, framerates in the vast majority of games is dependent on essentially GPU only.... RAM and CPU aren't going to help much, other than perhaps a couple of percentage points worth of performance, and that isn't likely to improve your gameplay experience to the point where you'd actually notice it. -
Ok thanks. I thought having 800 Mhz RAM should help, I didn't knew about the chipset frequency.
I have heard the FSX is CPU oriented, but I'll think I'll get some better (and cheaper) results by optimizing the game setting rather than the laptop hardware.
So there is no point to buy a new CPU as well (Penryn) because of the chipset 667 lock ? -
You could upgrade the CPU (see the neighboring thread where you originally double-posted the question) which, if the FSX is CPU-bound, should improve performance. Be aware that you void your warranty when you do that, though. And it does require some disassembly skills (nothing major once you have the manual, though).

Ok but is there a point to upgrate to a 800 Mhz FSB CPU (like the penryn) is the chipset is limited at 667mhz ?
