    G1s or G2s .... more 15" or 17" I guess.

I can't decide which of these to choose. Price really isn't a factor, although the cheaper the better. I am going to college. I will be living in the dorm. I can't decide whether to get a desktop replacement (17") or a more mobile laptop (15.4"). I game quite a bit, so the 17" would be nice for that. But I am wondering if it will be too big to take to class. Battery life doesn't concern me that much, though I don't know how many classes I will actually use it in because it's my first year. Also I could just get a 15.4" with an external monitor, but the 17" would be better for LAN parties ... except I don't know how many of those there actually are where I am going. In the end I guess I am looking for someone who has a 17"/15.4" in college in the same situation and me and hates it / loves it. Any input / opinions would be greatly appreciated.

    End of ramble.

    :p

It'll be my first year in college too and I'll be living in a dorm too. I think that I'll buy the G2s cuz it will replace my tv. I won't need to buy a tv. Everything that I watch is downloaded so the 17" is perfect for me. You won't have much space in your room for a tv...
Maybe the G2s is heavier but with a good backpack, It'll be perfect. Anyway, we won't need to walk that much.

I've seen the G1, it's as heavy as other 17" laptops. Go With the G2 if it's not much heavier.

The G2 is much heavier. The G1 is heavy for a 15", but the G2 is still way heavier, and the only 17" that comes close to the G1 in weight is the MacBook Pro. Considering that the G1 is cheaper and has identical specs, I would do what mikeymike suggested and go for the G1, plus a 22" external monitor. If you need TV, just get an external TV tuner.

I'd get the G1S and an external monitor =). I usually plugged my laptop and desktop into my 24" dell. Plus the 17" is about 10lbs if i remember correctly.

The G2S has a really nice WUXGA 1920x1200 screen. If you can handle the weight, go with the G2S.

I'd go for the G1s. Believe me if you're also going to use it for school purposes weight and size are definately big factors. Don't forget that you'll also be lugging around textbooks and what not, it gets troublesome and you start to get lazy. I ABSOLUTELY hate carrying around my current laptop. Don't make the same mistake by underestimating the weight.

It depends if you want to take your laptop to classes everyday or just leave it on your desk as a desktop replacement.

I'd get a smaller and lighter laptop with an external lcd if i needed a laptop on the go, preferably a 13-14".

I'd get another 17" with a more powerful video card if I had limited space (ie. dorm room), maybe a Clevo.

But that's just me, I don't really see any point in getting either, haha.

Thanks for the input guys. I really don't know how big my dorm room will be...if there will be room for the external monitor or not. Plus if my roomate wants to put his own tv in...well then you can see the problem.

well for one, 17" monitors are always heavy. For another, the chassis is like 25 percent metal. Not the light metal either (apparently). It is supposed to be anodised aluminum. I think it is closer to anodised wrought steel. (is that possible?). But yea, the stuff they put in the chassis, materials and stylistic elements are heavier. They also put a sort of steel (I believe) skeleton in it, to prevent flex and feeling cheapy.
